Start Over

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I am having issue editing my blog. I found a theme a really like and I activated it but I made previous changes to another theme I had before this current theme and I feel like it messing up how I want my layout to be. So, I want to start the blog over to get rid of changes I made. I want my blog to closely model the twenty four theme.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Your best bet is to activate Twenty Fourteen and I can help you return it to how it was after that:

    https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentyfourteen/

I don’t want to click the start over button for your site because you’ve already got content on it and starting over will delete your content.

I have the content backed up somewhere else so I wouldn’t lose anything.

Oh woops the blog I was wanting to start over was the young aficionado one

What is the exact URL starting with http:// of the wordpress.COM hosted site you refer to please?

And, exactly which wordpress.COM username account registered that site?

This is wordpress.COM support. I’m asking because we cannot accurately answer questions posted here until we have confirmed the URL referred to and verified the hosting.

We provide support only for wordpress.COM hosted sites. Our support docs do not apply to
    (1) local installs of wordpress.ORG software on your own server or
    (2) wordpress.ORG software installs on paid hosting, and we do not provide support for them at wordpress.COM. That support is found at http://wordpress.ORG/support/

Also, note that we do not provide Jetpack support https://jetpack.me/support/ for sites linked to wordpress.COM accounts with the Jetpack plugin so they display on the My Sites wordpress.com account page.

    Thanks for confirming the URL.

    re: switching themes

Themes are just “skins” on WordPress.COM hosted blogs. You can quickly and easily change themes on any WordPress.COM hosted blog to another one found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and no data will be lost or negatively affected by the change. The only time you may have to do a lot of work is if you are changing to a dramatically different theme with different features and/or if you have done any CSS editing.

Provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the blog go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes, Browse themes until you find one you like and click the “activate” or the “preview” link, or type in the name of the theme you want to use when it appears.

The theme customizer https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/ provides a preview function for exactly that purpose ie. so you can view what a theme will appear like prior to changing one.

rachelsquirrel will help you as soon as she can.

Yes, I have activated the theme and made changes to it with the customizer but I wanted to start it over because I had a previous theme before activating the current one and couldn’t get rid of the changes.

Ok, I can run the start over program on your site here – https://youngaficionada.wordpress.com.

I just want to be double sure that you’re ok with all the content being deleted? All your posts, pages, comments, and images will be deleted from our servers for good and this is not reversible. Are you sure you want me to do this? Sorry to be so pedantic about this but I’m always nervous deleting people’s data :)

    Hi rachelsquirrel,

I worked on my blog last night and was able to fix it how I wanted it to but I do have other questions.

    1. How do I access the function.php of my theme?
    2. How do I change the background color? When I changed it to my own custom color, it won’t change but when I select a preset it changes.
    3. How do I get the feature function for twenty fourteen to work?
    4. How do I get the ephemera function for twenty fourteen to work?

I greatly appreciate all the help!!

It’s looking great! Good job. I’ll answer each of your questions in turn below:

    > 1. How do I access the function.php of my theme?

It’s not possible to access php files on WordPress.com sites. This is for security reasons. However you can customize the theme by adding CSS code but you’d need to get the Premium upgrade first:

    https://wordpress.com/pricing/

    > 2. How do I change the background color? When I changed it to my own custom color, > it won’t change but when I select a preset it changes.

Hmm, you’re right. This might be a theme bug. I’ll ask our developers and get back to you.

    > 3. How do I get the feature function for twenty fourteen to work?

Select “Featured Content” in the Customizer:

    https://youngaficionada.wordpress.com/wp-admin/customize.php

It wasn’t displaying previously because you had selected a static front page for your blog. I’ve changed it back to display your latest posts on the front page and can see it there now.

    > 4. How do I get the ephemera function for twenty fourteen to work?

This is a widget. Open the Customizer:

    https://youngaficionada.wordpress.com/wp-admin/customize.php

Then go to Widgets and select the widget area then “Add a Widget”. Type ephemera in the search box and then add the widget.

    Hi again!

We’ve figured out the background! Try changing the background colour and then saving and closing the customizer. You’ll see the colour you selected on the very right of the screen. Unfortunately this is the only part that will change when you select a new background colour. The palette selection changes more because it changes other things in addition to the background.

  • Unknown's avatar

So can I change the whole palette? Also, how do I make it where only a summary of my post is displayed versus the full text. I searched the forums and changed my reading settings in the admin panel but the whole post is showing versus a summary.

Thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it!

    Ok, thank you so much!

  • Unknown's avatar

So can I change the whole palette?

Yes, but only by selecting one of the palettes that’s already there. If you want to customize the colours further then you’d need the Premium upgrade which will let you add CSS code.

Also, how do I make it where only a summary of my post is displayed versus the full text.

You’ll need to use the More Tag:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/more-tag/

The setting you found at Settings > Reading only changes the content that is emailed to your followers to a summary as opposed to the full post. The More Tag will change the post on your website.

    Hello,

I am having another issue with my blog. When I try to visit my site, it keeps crashing and saying something went wrong when it was loading.

  • Unknown's avatar

Is this the site that’s crashing – https://youngaficionada.wordpress.com ? Are you still having problems? It’s loading fine for me. Try clearing your browser cache if you haven’t already and let me know if you still need a hand.
