"start with a free site" link not working

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I’m trying to create a new, free blog under my existing account. I’ve selected the free option from the list of domains and clicked on ‘select’, which takes me to the ‘Choose a Plan’ page. However, where it says “or start with a free site”, this link is not working – when I click on it, absolutely nothing happens and it isn’t registering as a link. Other links on the page don’t seem to be working either (although I’m reluctant to click them as I don’t want to accidentally start up a paid-for blog!) I’ve tried refreshing the page and now it’s stuck on ‘planning the next chess move’. Can anyone help?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hey hi hello!

(although I’m reluctant to click them as I don’t want to accidentally start up a paid-for blog!)

Firstly, I must commend your cautiousness in avoiding accidental purchases! That’s awesome. Fortunately, in making WordPress.com purchases, there are the typical and almost tedious tasks involved (i.e. filling in details, submitting, etc.) which conveniently act as barriers to accidental purchases, so you can rest assured with exploring options!

However, where it says “or start with a free site”, this link is not working – when I click on it, absolutely nothing happens and it isn’t registering as a link.

Based on how far you got, there’s a possibility that the site has already been made and your browser just got stuck loading animations. To confirm, can you try the following steps?:

    1. Access your dashboard https://wordpress.com/home/

    2. At the top left corner of your screen, it should either say:
    – “My Site
    – “My Sites

If it says “My Sites“, continue reading.
If it only says “My Site” (not plural), skip to Step 6 below.

    “My Sites” (plural) text present:

    3. If it says “My Sites“, directly beneath it should be the text,
< Switch Site“. Click “Switch Site”.

    4. A list of your websites should come up, one of which is your new site.

    5. Once you click the new blog, you should be set! You can ignore the rest of the instructions below.

    “My Site” (singular) text present:

    6. Firstly, I suggest trying a different browser to make the free blog. Afterwards, if it works, there should be no issues returning to your preferred browser for editing!

If you don’t have another browser, here’s a selection of popular and updated browsers:
    https://browsehappy.com/

By some warlock’s spiteful curse, if using a different browser doesn’t work, let’s move onto Step 7 with your main browser.

    7. At the very bottom left of your dashboard (https://wordpress.com/home) should be the text “Add new site“.

For now, we’re just taking note of it in all its glory — but if you’re feeling patient enough, it may be worth clicking it and going through the free blog creation process yet again, as it may randomly be working now! Otherwise..

    8. Firstly, let’s check that your browser is up-to-date by going to this link here!
    https://www.whatismybrowser.com/

If it isn’t, updating your browser is a good start before moving to the next step.

    9. Clear your browser cache by following this documentation’s instructions:
    https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache

Note: if you’re heavily reliant on saved passwords/active logins, as opposed to memorizing usernames and passwords, make sure you’re only clearing “cache” (or “cached images and files”; varies per browser).
As long as you follow the instruction above, you will most assuredly be fine.

    For context:

browser “cache”: temporary storage of website files (e.g. cat pictures) that’s been saved to load websites faster.

    10. You’re now all set to try going through the free blog creation process again.!

If my instructions are too poorly written, let me know and I’ll purchase a screen-recording software to show the process by video!

Do please share if something doesn’t quite pan out as desired.
    In the meantime, good luck!

Wow, thank you for the detailed (and very entertaining!) instructions/explanations. I’ll try to respond one by one.

First, I’ve checked my list of sites and the new site isn’t on it, so it hasn’t snuck through already.

My browser is the most up to date version of Edge and all other sites/links are working fine.

I have tried to repeat the process a couple of times but it gets stuck at the exact same point each time. Although none of the links to select free site or one of the paid-for sites is working, the help link (via the question mark) on that page is.

I’ve just cleared my cache and tried the process again – same result – no link available to click through on ‘start with a new site’.

I can try with a different device and see if that helps – wish me even more luck!

Thank you! Tried with a different device and was able to create my new site, so this issue is now resolved. :)

  • Just noting I’ve merged your two threads — we’re glad to hear you’ve got it!

Hahaha goodness gracious! Thank you so kindly for your immense (charm and) patience! My apologies for walking you through all that rigor when there was a simple alternative, and thank you for the lesson.

I didn’t even get to deliver you more luck before you went and undid the calamity! So instead, I now wish you luck (the good kind) with full trust in your demonstrably effective use of it.

Should the need arise, you are more than welcome to post again in these forums! And if I happen to support you once more, I’ll at least be in uniform to prepare for being schooled yet again.
