Wondering what the difference is between owning a domain and then mapping it with wordpress, versus buying a domain through wordpress?

Good morning,
I think the biggest difference is the level of stream-lined efficiency; WordPress.com emulate’s Walden’s sentiment of “Simplicity! Simplicity! Simplicity!” =)WordPress is a publishing platform that makes it easy for anyone to publish online, and proudly powers millions of websites. If you purchase a domain through WordPress.com, you can buy a domain in one easy step and spend the majority of your focus on your beautiful content, and let them handle the rest. Essentially, you can get started much faster; it is mean to make everything through WordPress.com simple, efficient, and stream-lined.
Owning a domain through someone else and mapping it to WordPress means that it takes a little more technological know-how; you have to purchase it through an outside source, go through this series of steps (click here) to map your domain, and make sure you maintain both. One benefit of this is that, if you decide WordPress.com’s website hosting isn’t for you, you can then re-map your domain a little easier and design your website elsewhere somewhere down the line, though that will take additional technical knowledge.
Either way, if you own a domain, you should be able to take it with you if, for some reason, you would decide to leave.
If you’re planning on updating your website regularly through WordPress.com’s excellent software, I’d recommend purchasing your domain name through WordPress.com; it really is simple and efficient!
If you plan on someday in the future building and hosting your website yourself on another server, you could consider buying a domain through another server.
If you would like to see some additional benefits, please click here; this document talks about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, but it also compares and contrasts the benefits of WordPress.com’s hosting for you with WordPress.org (which is all about self-building and self-hosting of websites.)
I hope that helps! Have a wonderful day.
