starting a new blog

Hello! I am doing a blogging class at my University and we have been asked to get a blog in this site. I tried the free option and it actually does not give me a free option but takes me to a page where there are only paid options, from $3 dollars onwards/pay per year. I saw in the forums other people with the same problem but it does not say how it was resolved. Would you kindly help me with this issue? Thank you very much in advance! Fernanda Jimenez
