Starting a new site

Hi there, I usually build websites for my clients from scratch using dreamweaver as my base but writing all code myself. I am wanting to give WordPress a go as I think it will make it easier for me to create different things my clients are after what with the range of plug ins etc. To start with I want to redo my website using wordpress to have a good play and see how it all works. I already have hosting and a domain name. Is this something that I could keep with the company I am with or would I need to change hosting and domain over to wordpress? Also do you have any links on how to get started? Can I build my sites completely from scratch like I do in Dreamweaver if need be? Or do I need to start with a base template and go from there? Do you have any tutorials that would be worthwhile me looking at? Many thanks, Alisha

https://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/We cannot create a website from scratch here on WordPress.COM. We have to select a base theme and work your way up using that theme.
We cannot edit the underlying HTML, PHP and JavaScript codes on WordPress.COM. However, we can customize the CSS codes to have desired look and functionality, but you have to upgrade to a WordPress.COM Premium or Business plan in order to access the CSS editor.

Also, we cannot upload custom themes and plugins here on WordPress.COM. We can only use themes from here: https://wordpress.com/themes and plugins from the list given here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/
If you want greater customization possibilities for your sites, you might wanna consider using WordPress.ORG-a self hosted platform/software to create blogs, websites and more.

If you are using WordPress.COM you don’t have to worry about hosting. Hosting on WordPress.COM is completely free. All wordpress.com sites come with a free server space of 3GB.
If you want to increase this space, you need to upgrade to a paid WordPress.COM plan.
You can map your already existing domain to your WordPress.COM site by using the Domain Mapping upgrade.
NOTE:
You will need an upgraded WordPress.com plan on your site in order to map a domain.
