Starting a new website while owning an existing domain and 10 year old website

    Hi
I am looking to produce a new website for an existing domain. I am a self employed architect with a small business. The existing website domain is registered with 123 reg, and I am looking to keep it with them. I know my plan with them will change if it becomes a wordpress site.
I want to design the website over a number of months, and not viewed by anyone but myself. It will take me around 8-9 months to complete it as Im only able to spend 2 hours a week on it. I also need to keep my existing website running (it is 10 yesra old!) while I design this website.
In order for me to design on a wordpress design template it is asking me to direct wordpress to my current domain. I dont really want to do this as im concerned that my existing website will just dispear.
How do I do this? How can i start my new website design? I havent currently got past the second step where it asks you to chose a domain name or use an existing!
Thankyou from a very inexpereinced designer!

  • Hi there – Thanks so much for the details you have provided!

It sounds like you have two goals:

    1. Design a new site in a private setting using WordPress.com. (And you are not ready to use a domain you already own through 123 reg for this site.)

    2. Continue to keep your domain and site running on 123 reg while you work on #1 over the next 8 to 9 months.

    This is very possible!

When you reach the step where it asks you to choose a domain, you can skip that step. This will allow you to choose a *free* WordPress.com site URL to begin building. A free WordPress.com site URL looks something like this: yourawesomenewsite.wordpress.com.

When you start new sites, they are automatically set to private and await your decision to “Launch” them.
