Starting a second blog
-
First let me state that I am new to blogging. I do not understand most of the terminology or even what most of the things do or how to use them. Blogging does not seem to be as easy as I’ve heard it is supposed to be. Heck, I don’t even understand the box above that says: This topic is: not a support question, not resolved, or resolved. Well, I am looking for support, and it isn’t resolved because I have not even asked a question yet! That kind of stuff just doesn’t make any sense to me. But here is my main question now:
I want to start a second blog. I went to the first page of the set up, and the first thing to fill out is the Blog Domain. I do not want an upgrade, just another free blog. Do I use the same domain name I started the other blog with, or use another one? Am I supposed to fill it out at all?
One other thing. Above the Blog Domain fill in box it says “If you’re not going to use a great blog domain, leave it for a new user. Now have at it!” What is that about? I’m as lost as a golf ball in high weeds. :(

Hi. You can have as many blogs as you’d like. It might be a good idea to get used to the one you’ve already registered, but when you think of a new, original domain name, just fill out the form the same way you did before just with the new domain name… the “leave it for a new user” thing is just WP’s cute way of saying, if you’re going to register a blog, use it.
Blogging’s easy, just find the page that says “Add New Post”, type out what you want to say, and click the “Publish” button. After you’ve got that going, you can check out WP Support for what else you can do…

Hjacord….first relax and take a deep breath…I know just how you feel and I can and will help you here. No fancy terms no tech talk just plain english…ok?
To start a second blog you have two choice actually.
A. Sign out of WordPress, then go to http://www.wordpress.com and sign up just like you did the first time. You will have to create a NEW name and WP will assign a new domain for you. You will then have a seperate second blog. (THIS IS NOT MY FAVORITE)B. Stay signed in and just go to the page where you were creating the second blog again. Fill out the form as before just be sure to create a NEW name and again WP will assign it as the domain name. Then just proceed as you did the first time creating your new blog.
The advantage to option B is that WordPress will automatically link these two blogs so that when you log back in under “DASHBOARD” you will see BOTH your blog sites and be able to switch back and forth or if you want to open them both at the same time you can just open a second “browser page” and then open the second blog in there.
Finally, if you need help with the basic understanding of WP check out this site it is made just for people like you who want information in plain english where they can ask questions and get help.

hope that helps. :)

I agree with tfockler, if you want to make a second blog CHOOSE OPTION B.
I have made 3blogs and all of them can be maintain just by log in to one of the blog.

We’ve all been in the position of being new to blogging and banging our heads on the computer screen. Just take your time and it will eventually all come to you and you’ll understand it all in due time.

“If you’re not going to use a great blog domain, leave it for a new user. Now have at it!” is something they say because they always get requests for these domains that somebody registered and never used, and they don’t give them away to new people just because you haven’t gotten around to using them.
“This topic is: not a support question, not resolved, or resolved.” is here because this is the forum for tech support; if your question were about CSS, a theoretical “wouldn’t it be nice if..” question, or something off-topic like a game, that help staff ensure it was in the right place. The Resolved/Not Resolved thing is obviously Not Resolved right up until the point where you get and read the right answer, and then you, as the person who started the thread, can mark it as Resolved. This is helpful because it tells volunteers they don’t need to keep coming back to the thread to give you the answer.

TFockler explains it all to a “T”. I have only one more suggestion:
Spend a few hours just looking over all of the blog’s admin pages. Try each of them then look at your blog’s main page to see what it did (this is the method I use with each new site). You can also find a friend in the real world who can help you as you learn all there is to know about WordPress.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I appreciate it a whole bunch. I was thinking of using the first one for experimenting and the second blog for something particular I had in mind. I just went in and deleted everything in my blog and will start over again.
I wish I did have someone around who knows about this stuff, but I do not. I live back in the country and do not have any techno friends. (I had to ride a pregnant mule in here just to have a way back out again!) The only thing we have back here that is from civilization is electricity and a phone line which hangs half way out of the creek bank. No DSL, and every page brought up takes 5 to 10 minutes to come up, so that does not help when trying to learn something. By the time it comes up I forgot what I did before, and what I was going to do! Often we lose connection or a page never will come up. I’ve had that happen with this site several times, but like I said, it is the phone lines that cause that.
Well, I might try again. After seeing that the chances anyone will look at it is small unless you spend a lot of time making new buddies, I don’t see much use in it. I would take too much effort on this slow computer to fool with it. As I said, before, I am new to all this, and I think I just expected something different.
But I do know how to make a new blog now! Thanks. Sorry for venting. I can’t say anything in just a few words.
I don’t see a button, but this topic is RESOLVED. :)

@hjacord….WOW…I feel your pain but don’t give up now! Even with the problems your having blogging here is a great way to blow off steam if nothing else and given the situation your in, that could come in handy.
So let me offer you this…since your having a hard time with “speed” issues maybe chatting via e-mail would be a better fit for learning. Not only could you save the mail but you could go back and reference it anytime you like or even print it out. I would be happy to help you by sending the information you are looking for this way. Just get in touch with me at [email address removed – hanni]
