Starting over again – import and working with a new theme

Hi,
It’s been a while since I worked on our site. My question is in two parts:
1. I want to import content from a wordpress.org site to our relatively new wordpress.com site. The first time I did it successfully, but I don’t see a way to start over again with fresh import from the wordpress.org site. How do I delete the current content on the wordpress.com site so I can start over again?
2. I decided to try out a new theme for our wordpress.com site. How do I test it in the background without taking down the live version? I know I can preview a new theme with the current content, but I will need to do extensive customization before I could make it live. Is there a sandbox somewhere I can use to play/customize with themes using the current content, then easily make it live when ready?

Settings>reading>Site Visibility Site Visibility Allow search engines to index this site
Discourage search engines from indexing this site
Note: Neither of these options blocks access to your site — it is up to search engines to honor your request.I would like my site to be private, visible only to myself and users I choose

Thanks for your reply. I don’t think I made myself clear. When the site is public and indexed by search engines – a live site – how do I test/customize a new theme behind the scenes on wordpress.com, without taking down the live site? It would be like having a development site that you work on in the background.

You would have to do that on a different site. Then transfer the custom design upgrade to your real site.
In my experience it’s not worth the bother. Just slap the new theme on the site and tinker with it during slow hours. Nobody will complain.
