If I have a domain name already am I able to utilize a free wordpress website page?

  • Hi there,

You can, but your domain will be redirected to your free address. To use the domain as your primary address you’ll have to upgrade to one of our plans.

If I do the personal plan that is $4.00/month, that includes my own domain name correct? that would be a .com and not a .wordpress.com correct? And this is included the first year at $4.00 per month. What happens if I renew after that year? Does the price change? Do I continue to own my domain name even if I take my webpage down? Is it possible to speak on the phone with support staff? I could not find a contact phone number.
    Thank you

  • All of our paid plans include a free custom domain.

You’ll continue to own the domain as long as you renew your plan.

We do not offer phone support, but all of our paid plans do include email and live chat support.

Thank you for the response but all of my questions didn’t get answered. If I do the personal plan ($48.00/year) will my domain name as example be http://www.mywebsite.com or would it be http://www.mywebsite.wordpress.com? Also when I renew for an additional year as I continue to own my domain name is the cost still $48.00/year? Or is the free domain name only for the first year? And I am assuming from your response that I will not own my domain name if no longer use wordpress for hosting, that I would have buy my domain name somewhere else if I went to Wix for example to host and if so would I be able to transfer the domain name that I had been using?

And I don’t fully understand what the response to my first question from fstat means: “You can, but your domain will be redirected to your free address.” So if I already own a domain name http://www.mywebsite.com and I use the free website option from wordpress and someone types in http://www.mywebsite.com to pull my webpage up what happens? I do realize that with the free option that there will be advertisements and will those be at the bottom of my web page?

    Thank you

  • Hi there,

If I do the personal plan ($48.00/year) will my domain name as example be http://www.mywebsite.com or would it be http://www.mywebsite.wordpress.com?

You receive a domain subscription credit when you purchase the personal plan which you can use to register a custom domain (www.mywebsite.com).

Also when I renew for an additional year as I continue to own my domain name is the cost still $48.00/year? Or is the free domain name only for the first year?

Domain is included in the price of the plan only for the first year. After the first year, you pay for the domain subscription on top of the $48 personal plan.

And I am assuming from your response that I will not own my domain name if no longer use wordpress for hosting, that I would have buy my domain name somewhere else if I went to Wix for example to host and if so would I be able to transfer the domain name that I had been using?

As long as you continue to have your domain registered, you will continue to own the domain and transfer it to whatever host you prefer. you want to move your domain elsewhere, you can either keep the domain here and point the nameservers over to your new host:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-name-servers/

Or you can transfer the domain over to the new host:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/transfer-domain-registration/

And I don’t fully understand what the response to my first question from fstat means: “You can, but your domain will be redirected to your free address.”

You can absolutely use your custom domain with your WordPress.com site with or without a paid plan. You don’t need to buy a paid plan to have a custom domain here. You only need to upgrade to a paid plan if you need the features of that plan.

One of the features of all of our paid plans is to allow users to set their custom domain as primary. If your custom domain is not primary, people will still end up at your site if they type your custom domain into the address bar.

    Hope that helps!

Yes, that helped a lot! Thank you so much! One more question: How much does the domain subscription cost per year upon renewal of the personal plan after the first year? Thank you!

  • Hi there, it depends on the domain. Most .com domains are $18/year including privacy. You can see full pricing here:

    Domain Pricing and Available TLDs

    Hoping this helps!

Yes, thank you. I purchased the personal plan and started to customize the redhill theme. There is a “sign up button” on the home page and I want to delete this. Is that possible?
    Thank you

  • Yes, that’s just the demo content. :)

You can edit the page to alter it.

Thank you. Another question. I have tried the red hill theme and I am not sure that I like it. If I try another theme will the material that I put on the red hill theme still be saved there?

  • Yes, the material on the site is going to be saved to the site. The theme may display that information differently, however.

You can easily just look at the theme demos to determine if you’d like to try them.

For example, here are the instructions for the bransbury theme.

This is the link for the demo:

    1. I am not sure that my question was answered. I have created my site using the Red Hill theme. Once I launch the site, can I try the Alves theme without interfering with launched site utilizing the Red Hill theme?

    2. I have purchased the personal plan. The Red Hill theme has a “Send Us a Message” with Name, email, website, and message with a submit button. If I leave that on my website, will people be able to type the information in there, then having it get to my email? Or do I need to take this off of my site.

    3. I also added text on the contact page under the word CONTACT and I would like to change the color of the text from black to a color. How do I do that?

    Thank you

  • 1. You can preview how new themes will look instead of activating them, yes: https://wordpress.com/support/themes/#preview-themes

    2. You can keep that, it’s a contact form available even under the free plan: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/form-block/

    3. You can change the text color following these steps: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/paragraph-block/#text-color
