Starting wp site using previously registered domain name
-
Hello,
This is regarding starting a brand new wordpress.com website. The organization I’m helping had previously registered a domain name with with Go Daddy. Now they want to use the same domain but now they wish to use wordpress.com as a host. They wish to use wordpress.com with the premium plan and a wordpress template, but keep the domain they had registered w/Go Daddy. We want to cancel the Go Daddy account altogether (so not planning on redirecting the URL). I’m wondering what their best option is for keeping the domain but with wordpress. If they cancel altogether the Go Daddy account, will it take awhile for the URL to become available? If that’s the case, can they start an account w/wordpress under a different URL and start building the site and still use the domain they want when it comes available?
Also, they want to tie up similar URL’s. How much would that cost and can that be all done through wordpress?
Any suggestions appreciated.

Hi,
Unfortunately, WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers. If you have an existing domain from GoDaddy, I suggest that you might want to continue the domain services from them and set up the the domain mapping to point it to WordPress.com, you can check this out on how to do it – https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/
Letting a domain expired from a registrar might be risky because it will not give you a guarantee that you can still re-register it later on from a different domain registrar.
Regarding your URLs and content and if it is a WordPress site, you can follow the instructions on how to export it from your existing site and import it to your new site -https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/
Let me know how it goes on your end.
