static button

static button is gone, I am very new to all this and was looking around. it told me to set the pages as static and now that button is not available

one huge question, I bought a template now what do I do? do I download the template to my workstation at home? Is that not what this is about? I build my web site and then put it somewhere to be hosted.

if I had known there was no phone support I would no doubt picked another web service. not easy for a new user.

any help is appreciated. I am so stuck this is not going to be a good return on investment if I can’t get started.

    thanks so much

    Hi there,

For your first question, you can set a static home page by following the instructions which we’ve set out right here:

    Set the Homepage

And to the rest of your questions, no you don’t need to download anything. There is a difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com, which we’ve laid out right here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

In short, we serve as your web hosts and the provider of the software all at the same time. You very rarely will ever need to download things to your computer with our services. Everything you do will be accomplished by logging in to the site and working online, which we think is easier.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

good evening, that you for your reply.

maybe you can help me…again. as I was looking around using the tutorial I saw the radio buttons to turn ‘it’ to a static page. those buttons are gone now. are they gone forever? I don’t even know the difference between a static and non-static page. can it not be put back to a choice while I am learning?

I do not know the difference between wordpress.org and wordpress.com. my goal is to get a template to create a web site so I can launch out with a photography web site. I am going to host the site on Hostgator (already have an account established). I thought I would download the template ‘photographer’ which I purchased and build the site and then send it to Hostgator for hosting. how do I do that? get the template? or is there a way to send the template to hostgator? so help me, as I look up on the address bar I see .com. who did I enroll with and purchase the template? the template I purchased I can use to create the web site?

it would really be a great feature if we did not have to use email to discuss all this. with a 24 hour turn around with each message this will take forever.

there really is no personal support? I can’t be the first customer to express this.

not sure how we can continue to handle this discussion. I guess if you could address all my concerns paragraph by paragraph?

    thanks…

    Mike

There is indeed a difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. As the link which I sent you indicates, WordPress.org (which appears to be what you’re looking for), is a set of software which you can host with third party companies such as HostGator. It is something which you download to your computer and then upload. You can modify the files yourself and customize much more fully.

WordPress.com is much more simple. It operates off of the same software, however you do not have to download it. We already have everything running on our own servers. That simplicity has a tradeoff in that you cannot customize things as fully.

If you want to stay with your original plan to go with HostGator, you can cancel your theme and get a refund as long as it’s within the first 30 days of having purchased it. You should be able to purchase the Photographer theme through the WordPress.org repository, at which point you will be able to download it independently.

    Hope this helps!
