Static Front Page
-
I am trying to create a static front page but I don’t see HOME as as an option in the page drop down. Am I missing something? I want my front page to appear just as it does but without the PAGE NOT FOUND…… text.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You will find that if you create a custom menu the Home link is available in the Pages for inclusion in it. If you have a 404 (page not found) on your front page that’s the result of deleting the placeholder Hello World post and it will disappear as soon as you publish a post, not a page.

There are many common errors, misunderstanding and misconceptions when creating custom menus and you can read about them here > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/
Pages are static and are for content that rarely changes. They sit outside of the blog structure and you cannot post to multiple pages in any blog. There is only one main page for posts in a blog and all posts will display on the main blog page. There is no way to exclude posts from the main posts (blog) page.
The front page of the blog by default will display your posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. If you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts.
Choice 1 static front page
Choice 2 running page for all posts on front pageWhich do you choose? It’s one or the other.
If you choose Choice 1 static front page then you have to create two pages as I said above. After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.

Creating a custom menu did not make home appear as an option in the static page drop down. I did read the common mistakes link but I am still missing something.
I also published new post just as a test and the Nothing Found message did not go away either. It is not a 404 message.
What am I missing?

Since your site is set to private, we volunteers cannot see it.
1. Create a page called “home” and publish it.
2. Go to settings > reading and select the “home” page as your static front page.
3. If you also want a “blog” page for your posts, you will have to create and publish one of those as well and set it as the “posts” page at settings reading.
