Static Front Page with Blog Posts

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

    This is my WordPress site:

    http://lobsterbird.com

    I recently created a new page on my site (“Scribbles”) that I would like to make posts on but differentiate from my main blog on the home page. In other words, I would like to make posts on this page but I do not want these posts to appear on my home page.

    Under the Menu section, my home page is currently labeled “custom” and not “page” like the other pages in my menu. Up until this point, I have just been adding new blog posts and they have been appearing on this home page. I would like for the usual blogs to keep appearing on this page.

    Is there a way to make a Static Page with Blog Posts? Currently it is not even an option to make my home page static (I suspect because it is labeled custom and not page?)

    What would be the best solution to have some posts show and not others?

    Thank you for advising!

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    I would like to make posts on this page [“Scribbles”] but I do not want these posts to appear on my home page.

    You may assign “Scribbles” or any other page as your posts page at Settings > Reading. However, if you do so then the content of the page will not display.

    Under the Menu section, my home page is currently labeled “custom” and not “page” like the other pages in my menu.

    This would happen if you used the Links too rather than the Pages tool at the left of the Custom Menus page to create that link.

    Currently it is not even an option to make my home page static (I suspect because it is labeled custom and not page?)

    That’s not true. You may do so on the Reading Settings page as I mentioned above. Whether the menu item is labeled page or custom doesn’t matter.

    What would be the best solution to have some posts show and not others?

    In a custom menu, you may include links posts, pages, portfolios, etc. that you want to display, and exclude those that you do not want to display. You might also arrange them by categories, and subcategories.

    Correction: “Links too” = Links tool

    Hi musicdoc1,

    Thanks for your help. However, it is true that under the Readings Settings page all the other pages are able to be made a static front page or post page except my Home Page. Is it because it was created with the links tool? (I would attach a screen shot, but I don’t see how.)

    Is there a way to turn that home screen link into a page? That is, can I transfer all of my old blog posts to a page and then make it a static home page? Or is there some other way?

    Also, I am unclear what you mean when you say:

    You may assign “Scribbles” or any other page as your posts page at Settings > Reading. However, if you do so then the content of the page will not display.

    Do you mean the current content of the page? Or added content? I don’t understand what use it is to have a posts page that doesn’t actually display any posts.

    Thank you in advance for the clarification.

    You’d better read the Front Page support page. Let us know if you’re having trouble understanding any part of it.

    See also the Reading Settings support page.

    However, it is true that under the Readings Settings page all the other pages are able to be made a static front page or post page except my Home Page.

    It’s true if you mean the default homepage which displays posts. That is not a static page; therefore it can not be made a static front page. However, it’s irrelevant, becuase if you do create a static front page, then the default homepage is replaced by it, and a static page must be assigned to display your posts.

    People typically title this page “posts,” or “blog,” but you might just as well name it “home,” or anything you want. The content of this page will not be displayed. A Custom Menu is normally used when there’s a static front page, if for no other reason than to provide a convenient link to the posts page.

    I don’t understand what use it is to have a posts page that doesn’t actually display any posts.

    A posts page that is assigned when you assign a static page as your homepage, displays your posts. The content of the posts page is what is inside the page editor window. That can be left empty because nothing placed inside the window will display. It only displays your posts.

    Why not set a direct static page from setting. Its good to look like crictime. Its much easier to do and your site will be looking neat and clean.

    yes, those support pages make total sense, but do not actually address my specific problem.

    i understand that wordpress.com and wordpress.org are two separate entities, but i would like something like this feature in wordpress.org:

    Static Front Page Plus Blog: This model features a static front page as an introduction or welcome plus a blog to manage posts. Pages may be used to provide timeless content such as Contact, About, etc.

    or this:

    Dynamic Front Page: Sometimes called the integrated model, the dynamic site design features a static front page plus blog, however the front page is dynamic. It may feature a combination of static and blog content (Page and posts). The Twenty-Eleven WordPress Theme offers that feature as an example with their Showcase Page Template. It features the most recent post in full or excerpt followed by the next most recent posts as post titles. There is an option to add a slider for featured posts set as Sticky Posts above the first post, creating a dynamic mix of content on the front page.

    specifically speaking, i want my home page to stay exactly as it is, including continuing to post my most recent blog posts. so perhaps a static front page is not actually the correct solution? but the main point is that i want this page to remain as is.

    i would then like to add a new page for other posts that do NOT show up on that home page.

    is something like this possible?

    thank you

    @lobsterbird,

    i understand that wordpress.com and wordpress.org are two separate entities, but i would like something like this feature in wordpress.org:

    Static Front Page Plus Blog: This model features a static front page as an introduction…

    As you point out, Twenty Eleven allows this combination on the Showcase Page Template. This is not a standard feature which might be applied to any theme. Also note that

    The Oxygen theme has a somewhat different showcase page template which displays posts in three different sections: header area slider, recent articles, and more articles. However, in a test I found that the page content of the Oxygen showcase page isn’t displayed at all, so it can’t be said to combine pages and posts.

    i would then like to add a new page for other posts that do NOT show up on that home page.

    is something like this possible?

    No. As far as I know, two post streams are not presently possible on WordPress.com websites. The closest thing to that would be to have posts and portfolio projects both prominently featured on the front page, as is possible with the Sketch theme, for example. Portfolio projects are similar to posts in that they may be assigned project types and project tags, which correspond to post categories and tags, respectively.

    Please ignore the “Also note that…” fragment. I forgot to edit that out.

    I just noticed my error here, since you specifically asked about the possibility of “a new page for other posts that do NOT show up on that home page.” However, the basic answer remains the same. No, it’s not possible, and portfolio projects might provide the closest alternative.

    You might look into the use of category archives to create separate groups of posts.

    @ lobsterbird,

    Dynamic Front Page: Sometimes called the integrated model…

    I like the ideas suggested in this paragraph. Why not, for example, have two Showcase page templates on the Twenty Eleven theme, each with different posts? Or ten different showcases, each with a different category of posts.

    hi @musicdoc1,

    i just learned about categories, right before getting your message!

    i found this support page, which allows me separate posts on different pages:

    couldn’t i then link to one of these post pages as my static page? or does a static page have to be truly static? i.e., will not display new posts to that page (only pre-written non-changing content).

    the front page support page doesn’t address this specifically, as far i see.

    if this IS possible, i would like to do it this way separating posts into categories/pages and using one of them for my home page. however, because of my aforementioned issue that my home page is a link page, it is not clear to me how i would convert my current home page into a new page that could be made static.

    i will also check out these other themes you have mentioned, but i really love my current theme and would like to use this work-around, if possible.

    thank you!

    Which support page? Was it WordPress.org support page.

    couldn’t i then link to one of these post pages as my static page?

    As mentioned above, there’s only one post page allowed under the current WordPress.com system.

    if this IS possible, i would like to do it this way separating posts into categories/pages and using one of them for my home page.

    The automatically generated category archives pages display posts, but they don’t appear among the static pages which may be assigned as the front page at Reading Settings. However, you may use various modified shortcodes (Display Posts, Archives) to display posts. Any static page, including one with shortcode in the content may be assigned as the static front page.

    I see this thread was modlooked, but it sounds like you all are figuring this out well without additional help. If you get stumped or need help on a specific element of your site, let me know and I’ll be happy to chime in.

  • Unknown's avatar

    hi, @musicdoc1 — sorry! i don’t know why the link didn’t post to my message. no, it is a wordpress.com support page: https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/

    and yes, it is a categories archive page. i now see why that could not be effectively used as a home page. however, you can create multiple ones and have different categories of posts display on different pages. my site does also seem to give me the option of making the category page a static front page.

    however, Display Posts Shortcode is EXACTLY what i was looking for! thank you for leading me to this. next is customizing it to what i want it to look like…

  • Unknown's avatar

    @lizthefair — thank you for checking in!

    i am stumped now on the exact shortcode that i need.

    i would like this page to look exactly like it does according to the built-in posts page for the Ideation and Intent theme (including how it makes the newest post featured with a large photo and excerpt of the text).

    right now i am using this shortcode, which you can see on my “Blog” page:

    [display-posts include_excerpt="true" image_size="thumbnail" wrapper="div" category="blog" posts_per_page="-1" include_date="true"]

    it is close but not quite doing the trick. is there a way to find out the the shortcode that would make it look like my current “Home” page?

    thank you!!!

  • Unknown's avatar

    The bad news is there is no way to use the shortcode to make a page that looks exactly like the automatically generated posts page of category pages.

    That having been said, we could use CSS to add space and borders. Try pasting the code below into the CSS box in your customizer and see what you think of that look.

    .listing-item{
    	padding-bottom: 60px;
    	padding-top:20px;
        border-bottom: thick solid #fc5605;
    }

    hi @lizthefair — i’m glad i checked this! i am no longer being notified of followup posts, despite the fact that the box is checked…

    The bad news is there is no way to use the shortcode to make a page that looks exactly like the automatically generated posts page of category pages.

    to clarify: i don’t want to make a page that looks like a category page. nor do i want to make a category archives page. i would like to use the “Blog” page i made, which uses Display Posts Shortcode to only display certain blog posts. it is a regular page. i would like it to look like the Home Page that comes built in to the Ideation and Intent theme. surely, there must be a way to do this?

    thanks for your help.

  • Unknown's avatar

    i would like to use the “Blog” page i made, which uses Display Posts Shortcode to only display certain blog posts.

    I’m afraid this isn’t possible. The format you see built into your theme can only be used for your all posts page or a category page. The options I gave you are as close as we can come to making your blog page look like the built in format.

  • Unknown's avatar

    okay…

    i created a category page to see the difference. they are both on my site now (including your proposed CSS). you’re right — the category page is the closer but there are a few small tweaks that i would love to make:

    1. is it possible for the title of that column to read something other than “CATEGORY ARCHIVES: BLOG”?

    2. is it possible to have the top post be a featured post like the built in format? i.e., with a bigger photo, an excerpt of text, and ability to leave a comment?

    thank you. i really appreciate it.
