  1. is it possible for the title of that column to read something other than “CATEGORY ARCHIVES: BLOG”?

  If you wanted to hide the title on just that page you could do so with this code.

  .category-273 .page-title{
  	display:none
  }

  It may be possible to change the words to some extent, but the CSS required is beyond my current skill set. If you take your question to the CSS forum, someone there might be able to help you.

  2. is it possible to have the top post be a featured post like the built in format? i.e., with a bigger photo, an excerpt of text, and ability to leave a comment?

  I’m pretty certain this is beyond the powers of CSS, but it doesn’t hurt to ask in the CSS forum. They may be able to think of something that will work for you.
