Static home page without header and footer (using twentyten)?
-
I’m dipping my toes into WP to create a site to promote my new book. I’m starting out on WP.com to get a basic, clean, site up and running quickly; hope to transition to WP.org.
I’m using the twentyten theme because it seems simple, clean, and powerful, but mostly because it was the default.
I’d like to create a static home page with just an image of the book cover, and maybe some blurbs, but without the header (Image) and footer (Leave a Reply) that twentyten seems to apply to every single page.
How do I create such a static page that does not include the twentyten-prescribed graphic elements?
Many thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can turn off the leave a reply and comment box by opening the post in the editor and then clicking the “screen options” tab at upper right and make sure the “discussion module” is enabled and then in the discussion module down below the text area, disable trackbacks and comments and then click the “update” button.
As far as getting rid of the header, you could create a header image sized white (or whatever color) rectangle and then upload and set that as the featured image for that particular page, but this would leave a big blank spot at the top.
If you wanted the entire blank spot gone then it would take the custom design upgrade and a little CSS experience.

@SP: Thanks! I don’t see how I would ever have figured out the multi-step deletion for that Reply/Comment box.
@Aux: Good thought – I’ll do that. Thank you.

Can I make this choice (or change) for the entire site, or must I check these boxes for each individual page?

See here:

Interesting. Option (3) to turn off the comments for older posts/pages doesn’t seem to be working for me – at least, when I set it at 1 or 0 the Reply page is still visible on pages I edited yesterday. Let’s see if it changes tomorrow.
Also, I do want to allow replies on (only) the blog, so if this method works, it might mess that up. Again – let’s see.
Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. It got me exploring new options within the WordPress dashboard.

Your question was “Can I make this choice (or change) for the entire site“. If you “want to allow replies on (only) the blog”, then you must keep option 1 checked, option 3 unchecked, and disable commenting on static pages the way thesacredpath originally suggested.
PS Setting option 3 to 0 days has no effect (zero stands for no number).
