Static Main Page

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’m trying to create a static main page on one of my blogs (using Ocadia but don’t know which version) but that facility seems to have disappeared with WP’s newest update. I can’t seem to find anything related to iton the forums, either… Any suggestions, anyone? Thanks.

    go into your dashboard
    top right you will a button that says “settings”
    click “reading”
    and then you will see the setting asking what you wane t your home page to be.

    Thanks, dlager, but that’s what it used to do. Now there’s only 5 Reading settings (Blog pages show at most; Syndication feeds show the most recent; For each article in a feed, show; For each article in an enhanced feed, show; Encoding for pages and feeds) that I can see. Which one do you suggest?

    these are all really style choices.
    many people today have Blog or RSS reader where they can access many of their favorite blogs at once.

    If you set *syndicated feeds* to five (for example)….someone using Google Reader (for example)
    will be able to read your last five posts, if they have subscribed to your blog.

    you’ll probably want to set full text for now, they can see your full post in a blog reader.

    The other options allow a reader to foward a post a bookmarking groups, like Digg
    they are not necessary, in the long run they might give you more exposure though.

    I strongly suggest you don’t mess with the encoding (utc-8) unless you know what your doing.

    Know what I’m doing? You gotta be kidding! :)
    Thing is, all I really want to do is have a single, static page as the first thing anyone looks at. I guess you’d call it a Home page, but I just can’t find out how. It used to be so much easier before WP changed everything – or maybe I just got used to it. Still, I enjoy a learning curve… I guess.
    But many thanks, dlager.

    I still see the option for a static page, even in the Monotone theme which I believe won’t let you use it:

    Front page displays
    Front page displays

    Your latest posts

    A static page (select below)

    * Front page:
    * Posts page:

    Maybe you just need to do the cookie dance and look again?

    And, of course, the page must already exist before you can select it.

    Ah, raincoaster, good to see you. What you’re displaying here doesn’t appear anywhere I can see. I created the page a couple of times and deleted it when I couldn’t find where to put it. How do I get to what you’re showing here? And what do you mean by ‘cookie dance’?

    Cookie dance: log out of wordpress, delete cookies, (restart computer), log in again. The classic remedy for a million silly computer bothers. :-)

    I’M DANCING, I’M DANCING! (Thanks, boblets!)

    Just post the page. Then it should appear as an option for your static page. One possibility is that the theme will not allow it at all. You might want to test another theme.

    Thanks, folks. I’ll try all your suggestions in the morning…

    Couldn’t resist it, I’ll sleep later. And it worked! Thank you, all, very much.
