Static Page Question
-
Hi:
My blog is at http://sexistremarks.wordpress.com. This is a question about setting a static page. I’ve read the following FAQ: http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/02/20/having-a-static-page-at-the-front-of-the-blog/
Two questions:
1. Under “Settings,” “Reading,” “Front Page Displays,” if I choose “a static page,” why am I able to select BOTH options? That is, if it’s A static page (singular), why am I allowed to choose BOTH a front page and a posts page?
2. I assume that the “Posts page” is my blog. If that’s so, is that the same as the “Your latest Posts” option under “Front Page displays”?
Thanks a lot.

When using a static front page, you have to have a place for posts – which is NOT the static front page. Perhaps you need to review the FAQ on the difference between posts and pages. http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/11/a-post-and-a-page/
If you set your Front page to “your latest posts” then it is NOT a static page.

Thanks vivianpaige, I get it now. I had read the posts vs. page link in the FAQ. But god knows why, I thought that “static page” was synonymous with “front page,” which it’s not.

Unfortunately we’ve got a terminology problem with “page”, which is used in several different senses:
1. static PAGE, i.e. what you create in Write>Page,
2. posts PAGE, i.e. the area in which your latest posts appear,
3. archive or category etc. PAGE: like 2, but a particular selection of posts,
4. home/front/main PAGE, i.e. where you land if you use the main address of a blog (usually no.2, can also be no.1),
5. splitting (a post or a page!) into several PAGES with the next-page tag…
