Static pages gizmo
-
I’m puzzled – using the buttons in Options, I can’t seem to make a static page the front page of my weblog without making the posts page disappear. I’ve tried all the switches every way round I can.
Can anyone help please?
I’m using K2 Lite, and Firefox running on an old Win2000 laptop. My weblog is at http://gavinatkin.wordpress.com.
Thanks,
Gavin

I think you need to create a new page first called Posts or something like that. Then go to Dashboard > Options > Reading and select a page for both the front page and the blog page. Is that what you’re trying? If it’s not working, can you describe what you’re doing in more detail?

I’ve got two static pages, one of which I’m trying to make the home page, and of course there’s the weblog itself, which currently has only two small posts.
I hear the message that I need to create a page called ‘Posts’ but I’m baffled by it. Does the name matter? And why would I need a page called that name when all the posts are on the blog page?
What am I failing to understand here please?
Thanks,
Gav

Once you define a new static front page, you need to define where you want your posts to show up (the pulldown below the static page pulldown). If there is a page already there in that pulldown that says “posts” then you can select that one. I suspect that you can also rename that page by editing it once you get the static page set.

I still don’t get it – I’ve been round the loop of creating a page called ‘Posts’. I saved it, then repopulated it, then renamed it… But the problem remains. If I select either of my static pages to appear as the home page, the link to the weblog posts no longer works.
If anyone can help please, I would be most grateful. I’m sure that I’m simply failing to grasp something I’ll kick myself over…
Thanks,

Here is where the designation can be changed -> Options -> Writing
It’s difficult to help you because we cannot see what’s going on. Your blog is “private” and when we click the link we end up here http://wordpress.com
Perhaps your best course of action is to seek staff help with this. -
Thanks for the tipoff timethief – I had no idea my weblog was down as being private. How do I make it public please? In the dashboard options page it is toggled to public, so the issue must lie somewhere else. Now I’m really baffled…

I thought that might be the case. Here’s where to change the setting
-> Dashboard -> Options -> Privacy
Privacy Options
Blog visibility:
___I would like my blog to appear in search engines like Google and Sphere, and in public listings around WordPress.com.
___I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors
___I would like my blog to be visible only to users I choose
Mark your preference and then click “Update Options”HTH :)

I think you may also need this link too as K2 Lite has a “Blog” page coded into the template. http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/07/01/i-have-2-home-page-links/

As the thing was switched to public, I’ve just turned the privacy toggle to on, and then back to off. And now it’s visible to the outside world. Huzzah!
It’s late for us now tonight – I’ll take a look at the faq thing tomorrow.
Thanks, Gav

Having read the stuff, I think this is a K2 issue, and that if I try the fix mentioned it won’t work well for me – I need the page titles to be under better control.
I might try a different theme, though I must say I do like the clean look of K2!
The other solution is to make my weblog contents look a LOT more impressive, which may just be possible…
