statistics

In the last week, there have been sudden spikes in the statistics for my blog that are so high that they aren’t believable. Usually, I get around 10-15 views per day, then every other day or so, there will be views in the 100s. For example, on Feb 2, my stats show over 700 views & 483 visits. That doesn’t seem possible when my site only appeals to a small audience. What could be happening here?

  • Hi there,

Spikes like this, while they might not happen often, are completely normal. It just means one of your posts have been shared somewhere that more people than normal are now finding it.

Looking at the Referrers section of your stats page, that somewhere is Facebook – I see 410 visitors coming to your site from Facebook yesterday, and 499 on Sunday. If only a third of those visitors stuck around and viewed your home page and one or two additional posts, that would give you the total views you’re seeing for those days.

So your post has most likely been shared on Facebook by someone who has a big following on that platform. We have no way to tell who or where, though, as Facebook does not provide us with that information.

But overall this is a good thing – you have the opportunity to get some more regular readers here :)

    Kokkieh,
Thanks for researching my question, for your clear and well-written response…and for your friendly manner. I’m relieved to know that those large numbers of viewers/visitors could be a good thing, rather than some kind of attack against my site!
