Statistics not being reported from HackerNews

For quite a while now the statistics on my blog have been misreported. HackerNews has occasionally been a huge boost to my traffic, and it used to be reported correctly, but now it is absent from my statistics.

In other words, I’m quoting a bug in WordPress’s statistics display/collection. Not sure what else to say, except to post pictures:

Note how the referrals tab only quotes 1,600 viewers, while the number of visitors is upwards of 5k. I know that this is because the remaining visitors all came from news.ycombinator.com, where my blog post is currently sitting at #1.

  • Hi there – I see that you had a post featured there yesterday, and it’s showing only 13 referrals. I’m asking our stats folks about this, and I’ll let you know what I hear. :)

  • @j2kun, this is because Hacker News is served via HTTPS, so the header is not sent, and we have no way of tracking the referrer.

Some Hacker News referrers still show up in your stats, likely because they came from an RSS feed or some other browser extension or app that sets the referrer header to the Hacker News address. But the majority of traffic you’re getting from there is from the actual site.
