I am trying to work out is it facebook itself viewing, as I have the setting to share on facebook and twitter when i publicise one of my posts. How can there be someone one of my friends always ready to read, immediately every time i publicise and it shares on facebook? Could this mean my facebook account is controlled by someone else, hacked, taken over, as why would FB themselves always visit after every post published? There are always 1 visit and 1 view from Facebook after every post published, straight away, immediately almost. I find this strange. Or is this what normally happens when one shares to facebook automatically?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It very could be something to follow up with Facebook about however it may not be a big issue at all. This link shows more about stats and you can see and expect.
In regards your specific question, are you possibly using two browsers to access your site? Do you go check on Facebook yourself to see how it looks and also check to make sure the link works? WordPress usually doesn’t track your activity on the stats page, as long as you are logged in to WordPress. If you aren’t, then it will track it as a visit.

Thanks SBA Thompson,
Sorry for the length of my reply but there are a few factors here to consider for you and folks reading this. My last post wasn’t as clear, a little rushed with typos…
Anyway, I have not clicked on FB to check the link works whilst not logged in to WordPress or on another browser. I know its not that for sure. You see, what happens is I publish, then I visit the stats straight away and lo and behold, 1 viewer, 1 visit and referrer FB, location America. I have it on the setting of it to share to FB whenever I publish. Unless a FB friend is constantly keeping vigil of my FB wall, for new posts from my blog on FB to appear and then clicks open, but only on that post, leaving no likes, either on the blog post, or on FB either…
For the record, I don’t post on a regular and specific time schedule and I only thought it strange when I thought about it during my second to last post, after thinking about it on my third to last post and see again the FB referrer in the one before that so wouldn’t be surprised if the same thing happened there so far. So therefore on three, possibly a fourth, its happened, on my published posts that are still public. As well as this I noticed a few times on certain posts which I published by mistake without setting to private and now have turned them back to private as I am still working on them.
Hence, the FB referrer (a moderator, tracking me as some troll or bot by mistake? or someone who has taken over my account? or FB company always does a visit when posts are sent by WordPress?) is present on all my small number of posts, posted at irregular times recently, which I have now begun to notice. The visit is always straight away, and seems now to be always after I publish. I do have older posts as I left my blog alone for years, posts I published years ago, so I do not know about them.
No friends on FB have clicked so far any likes, or commented either, which is another suspicion I have about my FB account, as it seems that at a certain point, I lost my visibility there to most of my friends, with only ever a small number ever liking, or even commenting. It is something people are now talking about in relation to Instagram and ‘shadow-banning’ recently. I am not too sure, as it could be FB’s algorithm.
Anyway, all of this added together makes me suspicious, seeing an automatic visit every time I publish from FB. Unless its natural that when automatically publishing/sharing to FB, just in lieu of sharing it there, there is a visit from the site to WordPress?
I read the link you posted and found no mention of anything there which could possibly indicate this would be that FB always visits when you post to it for a view. The referrer is defintely FB, the location is America, where FB is, I dont think a friend from there would always open it as soon as it is posted either as they would have to be on my wall all of the time waiting.
FB is also hard to contact as well. I am hoping the new data protection rules GDPR, may improve things, but need clarity from the WordPress end and have so far not been able to locate others speaking of this online anywhere, well as yet.
Many thanks for your attempt.

Unfortunately I cannot answer this further. I don’t know how all those small things work and if you are worried about your Facebook being hacked, I would say that you would need to contact them.
In regards further research, I will get a staff member to look at this and help out where they can.
Thanks

Thanks sbathompson.
I also did an experiment, before publishing my last post, i deselected the automatic share to fb and then publically published, then i went to Google+ where it did share (I have that also on automatic share), from there, I opened it, (still logged into WP all the time), I then copied the url from my post i had opened from my G+ wall, then I pasted that url in a FB share on my FB wall, then went straight to my WP stats, and this time no immediate visit from FB in the stats was there. So seems only when a newly public published post shares on automatic, does it get a view immediately from there.
Another unusual thing happening is that although I have the ‘notify me of followup posts via email’ ticked, apart from an email telling me I had clicked to accept notifications from this thread, the two responses here, none of them showed up in any email. I was not notified to the replies here, I had to visit here to see if anyone had replied. Another unusual feature.
This all seems to be having an implication of limiting my outreach and visibility, like spanners in the works, as I have noticed also a similar thing happening on FB, no notifications as well. So how is this happening on the WP side of things too? No notifications even though the notify me box is ticked and there was an initial posts telling me i had asked for notifications? A common glitch, my email provider safe-mail? In FB I don’t get notifications by email, i just note that often replies to comments on other’s posts and comments back do not show, and same with messages, well sometimes, so different there, but a similar yet different notification problem. So if it is my safemail email, then it would seem problems with WP, email address (a different one to what i have for signing up for FB) as well as FB. Where else? This could have bad implications in my social reach. Yet perhaps its just a glitch.
Thanks.

Hi @scottpresso, I’d just like to summarize the issues you’re dealing with then address each one:
1) If you use Publicize, you get an immediate view from Facebook
2) You aren’t getting email notifications about this forum post, and as a side note you also don’t always get email notifications about Facebook stuff
3) You’re concerned about these issues affecting social reach
Regarding 2, I quickly checked our logs and confirmed we are sending the emails and your server is receiving them. So they are getting the email. If they are not delivering it to you, you’ll want to take that up with them.
Regarding 3, social reach is pretty complex, of course, so it could be affected by a number of things. If the goal is to get better reach, though, I can see one obvious thing that would help you. And it is unrelated to the topics here: use appropriate tags and categories for you posts. We have some tips on that here.
Regarding 1, I’ve seen something pretty similar once. It ended up taking weeks of going back and forth to chase down the cause, but we did finally figure out it was just a setting in her browser. Yours could be a number of things too, and since it’s involving Facebook as well it could get very complex. My suggestion is that if it’s very consistent, you can just factor that into your stats. If you are concerned about Facebook security, their team will be best suited to sorting that stuff out.

Thanks Supernovia, I am thinking of using another email address for notifications, so will see what happens with notifications then. I will also contact my internet provider and see why the notification-posts WP sends are not delivered to me by safe-mail.
Thanks for the tips regarding tags and categories, I will look into that. I am currently a little baffled by my new blog theme and its layout, not hundred per-cent happy with it. I restarted up up my blog which I had left for years and wanted to give it a new name, look and focus. On retrospect I should have kept my old blog and its old name and look though and started a new one with a new name and focus as my old posts are thus not fitting in with the new look, especially with pictures. On these older posts, my use of categories and tags may well have not been that good as well. I am learning. I do in my recent posts work with tags and categories but not happy with my new blog theme as it doesn’t allow categories in a drop down box near the top or sides my posts and seems the categories, dates, collection of blog titles etc are only accessible by clicking a triangle with a cross at the bottom of a post. Still looking into it.
Regarding point 1, that case you came across which was similar, to do with browser settings, could you safely then say alarm bells should not ring when seeing an automatic visit from FB as it could be simply a browser issue, settings, something simply like that? Just a technical thing? In other words a good or large chance its not something to worry about? That there is not a possibility something not quite right is going on the FB side of things? Perhaps I am over worrying. Yes, I need to try to contact FB as well. I’l also look at my FB settings again as well.
Thanks.

If it’s a single visit each time and it’s consistent, I would not be worried about it at all.
I would add tags and categories to maybe your last few posts, then to new posts going forward, and then (if you have time) re-organize the older posts.
it doesn’t allow categories in a drop down box near the top
Most themes allow menus, actually, including the one you’ve got. Here’s a video to help you set one up.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/That said, your current theme is designed for portfolios, with blogs as kind of a side thing. If you’re wanting at theme that’s designed to work with blogs, let us know what you like & we’ll see if we can make a recommendation.
-
Oops. I’ve got the wrong theme then and will have to change it and thanks for the menu tip, i never thought about that. I will explore the free themes next.
I also tried to change my email and it wouldn’t allow me. A pop up came up saying this other email address was already in use, which I found strange. I was using the settings on the dashboard in the menu ‘users’ ‘personal settings’ and ‘account details’. How can this new email address i want to get my notifications sent to already be in use?

You probably have more than one account. If you log out you could log in as the other, change its email address to something else still, then you’d be set.
Also, if the address you want to use is with Gmail, you could just use an alias – put a dot just before the @, for example. It will still deliver to the same address.
-
Do the two-blogs share the same WP Admin settings page-dashboard because when I look at the settings for email notifications on both they have the same e mail address that I am trying to change to that one said to be in use (which is Gmail)?
Perhaps there are different wordpress sites and I have used my gmail email address on one of those and have forgotten about it? Or is it something to do with having Gmail open whilst trying hence why you suggest to use an alias?
I was also told when I put a comment on your post about recruiting, that I needed to log-in with username and password, in order to make the comment, although I was already logged in anyway. I also found when i tried to click like, it didn’t work, some box briefly opened out and then disappeared.
The theme Independent Publisher Two looks good and I have tried that on my other blog which I have left in private, dusting on the shelf (I forgot about it even). Seems to work well there and I also experimented in adding a menu. So far so good with that. I think this would be a good one for my mainly writing style of blog.

@scottpresso wp-admin usually manages a single site. You can have multiple sites on one account.
If you’ll tell me what the email address is I can verify whether an another account exists. Our forum software will hide your email address from everyone but staff, so go ahead and type it here and we’ll check it out for you.
-
Ok, (email visible only to moderators and staff) was the one i couldn’t change to as it was already in use, perhaps I opened another account years ago. Thanks.
-
That does indeed exist already, @scottpresso. Have you thought about the alias comment I mentioned earlier?
-
I copied and pasted from my account settings for @scottpresso, the following:
Username
scottpresso
Joined March 2010Email Address
(email visible only to moderators and staff)
Will not be publicly displayedPrimary Site
D SCOTT PRESSO
scottpresso.wordpress.comWeb Address
http://scottpresso.wordpress.comI can’t understand why the other email address exists then for this account. I’m trying to change the safe-mail (where i have not been getting any notifications save the first one of this thread here and none others so far) to gmail. It seems its the safe-mail address which exists for this account and not the G-mail, although I may have used the gmail before i changed recently to the safe-mail address, so perhaps its something to do with this? I wish to get my head around this, why this is so, before I start to place a . before the @ Why the gmail account comes up as being used when it appears to not be so is somewhat worrying me as is the lack of notifications (what else I am not being notified about?). I need to know why this is so before I try other things. Thanks.
-
@scottpresso, no need to share the personal info here. As staff we can see. The only problem is that the address you want is just already in use for your other account.
Can you try the alias I’ve mentioned a few times? It’s just adding a dot to your email address, for example:
(email visible only to moderators and staff)As far as your mail provider is concerned, the address is the same. But in our system, the address is different, so it will not show up as “taken” .. can you please try that? It lets you use [functionally] the same address for both accounts.
-
You said it was the scottpresso account, which is the one I have showed to be using the gmail address, and now you say another account? Which as far as i can see, the gmail account is not being used by it but the safemail. But it says it is being used when i try to change and cant understand why this is so. Can you explain that specifically, because its troubling me please. This is what i wish to find an answer for. If it was my old email address used for this account, then i changed to the one i am not happy with, then surely i should be able to change back as its not being used. There is no emails, notification etc sent by WordPress to my Gmail, so if this is the one which is used, i really don’t get it why is this so?
“As far as your mail provider is concerned, the address is the same. But in our system, the address is different, so it will not show up as “taken” .. can you please try that? It lets you use [functionally] the same address for both accounts.” I don’t understand what that means.
-
Groan, i meant to say, “which is the one I have showed to be using the safemail address” (cant edit my previous post which opens clearly wrong please read)
-
You said it was the scottpresso account
Hmm, no. It is another account. What I did say though is that I’d like you to try the gmail tip I mentioned earlier. Please try that then update me here.
