Stats and Dynamically created category pages

    Hello,

I’ve read the stats page info http://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/ but can’t seem to find the answer to my question.

I have some dynamically created pages on my site that are generated by clicking on the menu bar. These pages show all posts from a selected category.

How is the viewing of one of those pages recorded in the stats? Are they likely to be showing up as clicks on the “home” page?

    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

As far as I am aware, yes, they are reported as clicks to the home page. Andy, though, is the staffer who’d know for sure, as he wrote the stats program.

    This is my understanding:
<blockquote. A view is only counted for a post or page when the permalink URL is visited.

So if a visitor clicks a category tab in your custom menu the page opens and that result in 1 pageview of that specific category page.

If they then proceed to click a title in the category display and a post displays then that’s a second view but it accrues to the post.

I’ve placed links to some dynamically created pages on some other sites today.

I’ve noticed that views of my home page are up from normal.

I use a page called Welcome as the front page for my site, so presumably those dynamically created pages are being recorded as hits to the home page.

    Hi Ian,
I haven’t set a static front page on my blogs for years. It’s my experience that they are traffic killers that also suck from an SEO POV. If you require confirmation you can contact Staff.

    Thanks for the tip.

It’s not your usual blog site in terms of content, it’s aimed at very specific audience with referrals from a few related sources, and I have a very specific objective for the site. So traffic isn’t the main priority.

I might look at changing things around though. I’d like a dynamically created page but the thumbnails created in post format are quite random and don’t always represent the piece that well.

I do get quite specific hits from search engines, I had one last week “Ian Fox Died” and the venues name. That was after a gig didn’t go very well. So the search engines seem to be working. The site map is submitted to Google and people have told me they’ve had Google alerts within a few hours of a post going up.

    This puzzles me:

but the thumbnails created in post format are quite random and don’t always represent the piece that well.

Are your referring to the thumbnails displayed on Facebook or to image alignment within the posts?

No I was talking about the thumbnails that the Twenty Ten theme creates when you select, Gallery as the post format.

    Post Formats

I did suggest in the ideas section once that it would be great if as well as selecting a featured image for the post you could also choose a the thumbnail for it.

For example one of the thumbnails generated on my site at the moment isn’t actually in the post it links to. It was the first image added to the piece when I created it but I edited it out later on, it was never in the published version. Yet it remains the image in the thumbnail on the dynamically created page.
