Stats are confusing me

Hi,
I’m relatively new to blogging and WordPress, but I have 2 main questions. The first is, does WP count every time I log into my blog? Someitmes I have to edit and preview my post numerous times and I don’t want these visits counted in my stats. Is there any way I can control that?Second question is, why does one of my posts publicized on Facebook say it’s been seen over 600 times, but this is not being counted in the stats? How can that be possible, if to read the article on Facebook, you have to click on the blog?? HELP!

If someone clicks on a link shared on Facebook and that leads to viewing a post on a blog, that is a pageview and it’s counted.

Please do not assume that everyone who clicks a like button actually reads the post on your blog because odds are they may not.
Also note that those who follow your blog in the Reader or by email don’t have to click into the blog unless they wish to.
Likes and shares and comments and reblogs and follows are not page views. In fact, likes, shares, comments and reblogs are completely misleading when you are talking about page view stats. Your followers and anyone with a WordPress.com/Gravatar account who is logged into WordPress.com can “follow” your blog, “like”, “share” and “reblog” your posts in several locations such as the Reader, without ever clicking into your blog and creating a single page view stat.

You can control the length of the entry sent out on your RSS feed here > Settings > Reading. Choose the “summary” setting for your RSS feed rather than to “full text”. That will compel followers who are not using mobiles to click into the blog to read the full post which will create a page view stat.

OK, but if Facebook says that a post has been viewed, I don’t mean that the person had “liked” the post of my blog page, but that the actually post has been “seen”, wouldn’t that count as someone having clicked on the post and been redirected tot he blog itself? Ans if so, wouldn’t it then be counted, if they are not a WP account holder?

You’re welcome. All I know is that If someone clicks on a link shared on Facebook and that leads to a click in and actual viewing of a post on a blog, that is a pageview and it’s counted.

OK, I’ll wait for some more clarification, because the stat numbers on views are no where near what the traffic suggests on FB and I’m curious…but thanks again!

Regarding your first question, admin views are not counted in your stats unless your blog is private (yours is not). So, you should not see your views count in the stats while you’re logged on.
Regarding the Facebook issue, are you referring to the stats at the bottom of your posts shown here?
If so, those are not the same as page views on your blog. That just refers to how many of your Facebook followers have seen your Facebook post. That does not translate to a page view on your blog. In order for the page view to register, the reader would need to click through and visit your blog.
Let me know if that’s what you’re referring to!

Thank you for responding. My second question is clear now, however, I now have another question on my first question.
My first post was not published until April 1st, however, my stats sre reflecting visitors and views prior to this date, and I know that was me bc I was still tweeking my info page and such. Who else could it have been?

Did you potentially have your site set as private at that time? If your site is set to private, admin views will count towards your site stats. It looks like you also published a few pages prior to your first post. Did you perhaps look at those pages in a different window to see how they would appear or pass them along to family and friends for an early look?

I don’t think my site was ever set to private. I might have looked at one of my pages from my daughter’s laptop to see how it looked, while I was setting up. That must be it. Thanks so much for all your help, I appreciate it, I’ve taught myself WordPress for this blog, and it hasn’t been easy at times, so I’m still learning. Thanks again!

Unfortunately, it isn’t possible to delete views from your stats page. Let me know if you need anything else!

One more question, if I view my page from my mobile phone, will that be counted as a view or visit, (btw, still not clear what the difference is between viewer and visitor).

Yep! Provided you are not logged into WordPress.com, viewing your site from a mobile device will be counted in your stats. Visitors are unique people that come to your site. Views is a count of how many times your site has been loaded. So, a Visitor could come to your site and visit multiple pages therefore registering multiple Views. Does that make sense? OK, but if I’m logged into my blog on my WP mobile’s app, will it count me as a visitor or not, since I’m logged in with my admin password?
