Stats Classics: How to set?

  • Unknown's avatar

@apetcher, you posted some feedback about stats in a thread about the notifications bell icon. I’ve decided to reply here so I can keep the other thread on-topic, which helps me organize feedback (I know that’s not always possible, but I like to try). :)

Only 10 days statistics in view

This is good feedback. Thank you.

No facility (as far as I can see) to view statistics for weeks and months

You can click the links for weeks, months, and years at the top of the page.

No facility (as far as I can see) for period summaries in any of the data boxes.

The full blog summary view was left out by mistake and will be added back. I think summarizing by selecting dates could be a future update is a great suggestion. We might be able to add that in the future.

I think you’ve posted some duplicate feedback. Once you’ve posted in one place, there is no need to re-post the same feedback in other threads. Thanks so much!

Thanks again, designsimply for reading and responding to our concerns about the changes.

I was not looking for the countries map. I do not use that Stats page. I use the very old classic one and prefer it over both the newer ones.

Like I said on another thread there are things that I do like about the newest Stats page, however, it is not user-friendly because of the layout/design in portrait not in landscape (horizontal for desktop users). Too much scrolling and also too-blue.

My question is will the old Stats page with the countries be discontinued?

Thank you again for taking our suggestions/concerns to the design staff. Hopefully some of this will be implemented.

My question is will the old Stats page with the countries be discontinued?

To clarify, is this the stats page you’re referring to? https://dandelionsalad.wordpress.com/wp-admin/index.php?page=stats

Thank you again for taking our suggestions/concerns to the design staff. Hopefully some of this will be implemented.

    You’re welcome! Some will. :)

I certainly HATE the “upgraded” new stats page. The old one was just perfect.
    I certainly miss the SUMMARIES:
views for each page / 1 day, 30 days, year, all time
views all pages / day, month, year, all time
    etc.
I run 368 different pages on my site and I just had 500.000 views (all time).
From the “upgraded” mobile-friendly b…s… I would not even know about it! The new stats include some items that I don’t even care to know about!
Let every member decide WICH STATS they prefer. I certainly go 100% for the old stats! I would even PAY EXTRA for keeping the old stats!

  • Unknown's avatar

No, that is the very old Stats page that I always use.

The one with the countries listed is a WP blue bar page. Will that one also be discontinued?

I really do like the list of published posts by day/week/month/year. That is very good info to have.

And we definitely need the overall Summaries back. I use that to see what the average number of views are compared to previous months/years.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @designsimply

The full blog summary view was left out by mistake and will be added back.

This response just emphasises one of the points that I am making. If the changes are thoroughly tested, as you assure us that they are, how can a mistake like this happen. The whole upgrade is so sloppy it beggars belief.

Well done for sticking at this and staying so cheerful!

  • Unknown's avatar

In “Top Posts and Pages” (classic stats) there used to be a link to the individual page’s stats page, now the is a link to the page/post itself!
Why? I don not want to check/read my own post/page, just because somebody else did. I would like to see how the stats of a post developed recently, to see how successfull it is, nothing else.
How do I find the individual page’s stats now in the “upgraded” stats page?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @dandelionsalad

No, that is the very old Stats page that I always use.

The one with the countries listed is a WP blue bar page. Will that one also be discontinued?

Okay, I think this is the one: https://wordpress.com/my-stats

Yes, I believe that one will be removed at some point. I am not sure when though.

And we definitely need the overall Summaries back. I use that to see what the average number of views are compared to previous months/years.

    You got it. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

@theo48, the other summaries are still there. You can get to the page-specific stats by clicking on a post title from the main stats page. If you meant something else, then I misunderstood your comment but I’d love to help. The views by day, week, month, and year are linked at the top. The all time view will be added back after we received some helpful feedback in this forum pointing out it was missing. I appreciate that feedback!

From the “upgraded” mobile-friendly b…s… I would not even know about it!

You can ignore that point if you don’t use a mobile device to view stats. The mobile design is separate from the desktop design. If you don’t like the desktop design, it’s helpful to say why exactly and not mention mobile because it’s not mobile. It helps a ton if you can give specific feedback. For example, after asking people for more detail, I found that they dislike that it takes more scrolling to view all the stats now. That’s actionable feedback, but not liking or caring about the separate mobile design that you don’t use doesn’t help me to get to the right feedback that can help everyone.

In “Top Posts and Pages” (classic stats) there used to be a link to the individual page’s stats page, now the is a link to the page/post itself!

That is still there. Click directly on the post title to open the stats for just that post. The link on the right that says “View” is separate and will open the post.

Thanks so much for your feedback so far!

    @designsimply

It is becoming increasingly clear to me that no one seems to know what they have done. It is as though developers didn’t know what was there before, what they have replaced and what they have omitted in the upgrade. So many functions have disappeared into the improvement black hole the product is almost unrecognisable. There is no logical flow to the screen options. There is a blue tool bar and a black tool bar that do different things.

When users point out that functions have disappeared there seems to be genuine surprise at WP.

    The frustration continues…..

  • Unknown's avatar

We did miss that detail about the full blog stats link—I’m sorry about that! Any bugs found are being fixed right way. And I am doing my best to help you. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks, designsimply for making clear that both the older versions of the Stats page will be discontinued and we will only have the “new, too-much scrolling” one to use in the future.

  • Unknown's avatar

I have to say I find the whole situation ludicrous. The design was great. LOVED the map w/ the countries stats, for example. But everything was beautifully laid out. So why on earth has a great design been chucked out? And why should I have to go through 4 steps to get to the old design? I’m not tech savvy, but the idea that people who are could create this mess is quite something.

  • Unknown's avatar

Horrified to read that you intend to discontinue the old stats page given the amount of negative feedback on the new one. I wish I believed WP cared about its users, but I don’t.

You ask for feedback – too much scrolling, less information available, and too many clicks to get from place to place. Do you really need more than that? This is a badly designed change that a significant number of your users are making it clear they don’t like. Surely you will pay attention and, if you don’t reverse it, at least don’t discontinue the old version. Digging your heels in over a failure makes no sense…better to move on and try to take your customers along with you next time. If there really has to be a next time…

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you for your feedback @rhythloday and @fictionfanakaff. I appreciate that you wrote about a specific detail such as the scrolling. Please also keep in mind change takes time. The new design will evolve. I am not sure how much or how fast, but it will. The best thing I think I can do to help you is to collect the feedback in an unbiased way, which I am working on for everyone.

The new design has only been public for a few days so far, and I am still collecting feedback from this thread which about 10 people have participated in so far and one other thread where about 34 people have participated so far.

  • Unknown's avatar

If you’d like more feedback, many of us prefer more days listed than the 10 on the “new” Stats page. Having the layout wider to fit our screens would fit the 30 days like the old Stats page.

    Where is the time listed?

Why doesn’t the click to go to the top work on the toolbar/admin bar?

Where is the map graphic for countries? I clicked the “view more” and it only shows a list of countries, no map.

Will we be able to move the various modules like the old Stats page?

Why change the Stats page so drastically?

Why not only make improvements, have additional stats available and keep the layout the same, especially if it was designed for desktop users?

  • Unknown's avatar

@dandelionsalad, hello again, and thanks for your questions. I don’t have an answer for every single question yet. Here are the things I know or that I have questions about back.

    Where is the time listed?

The time in the heading if you are viewing the current day looks like it was removed. I am not sure why. I can ask to see if they are willing to add it back. I don’t know if it’s considered a critical part of the design and they may decide to leave it out. Can’t hurt to ask.

Why doesn’t the click to go to the top work on the toolbar/admin bar?

Are you talking about the new stats page at https://wordpress.com/stats/ ? I don’t see the link you’re talking about. I’m sure I’m just not looking at the same thing you are or that I’m not understanding exactly what link you’re talking about. Could you help me and give me a little more detail about where you are looking?

Where is the map graphic for countries? I clicked the “view more” and it only shows a list of countries, no map.

Here is what the map looks like to me right now: https://cloudup.com/crLOdS5w7fe

I got to that map by going to https://wordpress.com/stats/MYBLOGNAME.wordpress.com/ and clicking on the heading “Countries”

Will we be able to move the various modules like the old Stats page?

I am not sure yet. Currently, it is not a planned update that I know of.

Why change the Stats page so drastically? Why not only make improvements, have additional stats available and keep the layout the same, especially if it was designed for desktop users?

There were a lot of factors involved in the decisions for the new design that I was not a part of. The new design will evolve over time. Please keep in mind that the new layout has only been public for a few days so far and that feedback is still coming in.

designsimply, responding to your comment yesterday addressed to me, theo48:

    (A) Yes, I actually see the graph “views/visitors from 2007-2014”.
But the data base behind is it WRONG:
    1. It says there are 0 (zero) views and zero visitors recorded for me in 2007 and 2008.
(Oh great, I started my wordpress website in July 2007, but according to your stats, the first visitor turned up in 2012 …)
But, if I click on the (invisible) space in the graph, either 2007 or 2008, a Top10 list of viewed pages appears, which is not much, but …!
    2. No (zero) visitors were recorded in 2009, 2010, 2011.
    3. 2012: 2227 vistors viewed 75.448 pages = average: 1 visitor checked 33,9 pages. Oh really …?
(Normal average on my site is 2,5 pages/visitor …)
    3. The number of visitors are only recorded in a correct way up from 2013.

    (B) If I click to see “ALL Posts&Pages”, say, for 2014 (there are 368 pages on my wordpress website), I get a very long list, which I CANNOT PRINT OR COPY for my personal records. The full “all pages” list is not transferred. Just the top20 of the 368 posts/pages is appearing in print, but that top20 list is repeated in print several times!

    (C) To keep the above mentioned data in an alternative way (and print it) I would have to produce and print up to 20 screenshots with 20 parts of the full list. Stupid …
(Up to now, I just print the full “30 days” page-lists every month, and the full “all year” page-list around New Years Eve. Certainly very useful information to keep. That used to be easy, but it’s all over now …)

    (D) WORST OF ALL of your web design mistakes:
I click on a post title for page-specific stats. “Months and Years” + “Average per day” + “Recent weeks” charts appear.
Now I get a 13 column box (Jan-Dec + Total = 13 columns), but only 9 columns are shown (Jan-Sep)! Now I have to scroll again (horizontally to the right), to see the rest (Oct-Dec + Total), losing the first 4 columns (Jan-April) in the meantime!
I have no chance to see the 12 months of a year in any way at a time! Now that is really stupid…
THAT BOX HAS TO BE ENLARGED TO A MUCH BIGGER WIDTH = WITH ABSOLUTELY NO HORIZONTAL SCROLLING INVOLVED!
Just add a few inches to that box (=good), or maybe use smaller column size (=bad) or use a smaller script type (=very bad).

    (E) I am still hoping that the ALL TIME Posts&Pages list we reappear again! Very important …

    (F) To add what others did before: If I hired the web designer that constructed the “upgraded stats”, that person/team would be fired immediately. No, still trying to be nice – maybe he/she/they would get a job at the word press cafeteria, serving drinks or cleaning tables.
Anyway, all of the new design should be erased – and the old stats should be used again.

There are probably many other mistakes in the new stats design that we have not detected yet. But hell, we wasted so much time now checking and criticising these new stats pages, just because things ( that used to be just perfect) were changed in a very bad way.

  • Unknown's avatar

The time of the stats is critical info. How does one check from one time of the day to another without the time listed?

On all the Admin pages and my actual blog posts, I can click the very top Admin bar and it takes me to the top of the page. On the New Stats page, it does not work. I tried it on WP Reader and it works fine.

I can’t see your screenshot through Cloudup, but I know what the map should look like. I just can’t see it on the New Stats page. When I click on “Countries” it goes to another screen with a long list of views by country. No map graphic.

Taking away functions like being able to move the modules around is not a progressive change for the better, that is moving backwards.

The layout does not make sense to me. Making it a much narrower, less days shown on the graph, and having to scroll down, and down, and down to get info is not an improvement.

Thanks again for taking our suggestions and concerns, designsimply.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @theo48

    (A) Yes, I actually see the graph “views/visitors from 2007-2014”.
But the data base behind is it WRONG:

Thanks for the extra detail and for reporting this! I’ve reported the problem with 2007 & 2008 being wrong in the graph. That is a bug, and someone will be working to fix it.

To clarify, the duplicates happen only when you try to print, correct?

Now I get a 13 column box (Jan-Dec + Total = 13 columns), but only 9 columns are shown (Jan-Sep)! Now I have to scroll again (horizontally to the right), to see the rest (Oct-Dec + Total), losing the first 4 columns (Jan-April) in the meantime!

I will look into this. I believe you are the first person to report it in the forums even though a lot of people have been commenting.

    (E) I am still hoping that the ALL TIME Posts&Pages list we reappear again! Very important …

They will! That’s a planned update being worked on based on some other user feedback. Great note. Thanks for mentioning that it’s important to you.

Thank you very much for your feedback.
