Stats Classics: How to set?
-
Yesterday I posted a comment on this post (politely) challenging the positive characterization of WP Stats in the first paragraph of the post,
When I looked yesterday afternoon, the comment was still visible to me, marked as “awaiting moderation”.
When I looked this morning, the comment had disappeared and was not among the posted comments. I can only conclude that the comment was deleted.
If that’s what happened, that is a very shameful commentary on how WP deals with dissenting opinions.

We’ve made some progress here. Let’s voice our frustrations, concerns in in a productive manner, so we can keep this thread going. Attacking each other isn’t going to accomplish anything.
It would surprise me if the changes were part of a larger effort to force users into user subscriptions or premium upgrades as it would virtually ensure a mass exodus from WP.com to WP.org, with WordPress itself losing a fortune to its own open-source model. The cost of a premium upgrade is comparable to what one could pay for a decent self-hosted account for a year, and we’ve always had Google Analytics over on that side.
-
No need for personal comments. We must protect this thread.
In my long life I have taken as my model the final scene of the play “Antigone” King Creon has killed Antigone’s brother and to add the punishment, strings his body up for pubic view.
Each night Antigone cuts down the corpse and buries it. Each morning the king’s soldiers unearth it and string it up again. This goes on and on. The angry solders keep telling Antigone that she will ultimately fail.In that memorable scene Antigone walks center stage and answers the taunts.
“Then I shall have TRIED … and failed …” she says.

I asked there in the comments “Is there a reason why this only will be available for business accounts?”
Matt answered: “Sure: Because analytics are most frequently needed by more advanced or business users, and it also makes the business plan more valuable for its users, or compelling for someone to upgrade to it.”
I don’t have a problem with the statement that it makes the business plan more valuable. I do understand this. While I love google analytics, I can live without it.
However, when I read “more advanced users”, I see the hidden message and think back to the recent design changes again as well. The transformation is done to paint a clear line. Basic accounts are for beginners, everything above for more advanced users.
That explains why most of us here are unhappy with the new design, because we are far apart from being instagram noobs. That shows that most of us here were right when they mentioned transformation to make it newbie friendly. Or when words like “downgrade” for “customer reach” came up.
Basic account, even if with upgrades, get now only offered the entrance to blogging. That is the new agressive direction. Features we once saw will now only be accessible if you pay to climb the account ladder.
To be honest, when Matt said it’s not about investors, I don’t believe him. It is. That is the usual transformation that customers have to deal with when investors mess with a service. I assume Automattic will now become as creepy as Electronic Arts, to name just one of a tons of examples.

@tamaratattles: you are not only rude about Time Thief, you are wrong. She has been a great help to me with previous problems, and she is a volunteer giving up her time to help the WP community. You owe her an apology.
I understand that you are angry: I am too. But please don’t be abusive, it just gets the thread shut down, and it achieves nothing. -
Let’s make sure we stay on topic … which is the “upgrades” to our stats page.
Whether or not this is a ruse to force people to move to the paid service or not … the fair compromise is to allow us the option. Newbies can be steered toward the “upgraded” page fairly easily by using those very words. They will be liable to choose “upgraded” automatically … it’s the oldest advertizing trick in the book.
“Just give us a choice …” Antigone :)

I really do understand your frustration but please, if you would, there has been such a lot of work on and off the forums that is worth protecting and, to be fair, I think the lady has been very stressed for a long time.
-
A number of us have expressed concerns about the possibility of platform differentiation, or tiered services before; as Matt himself once explained, 80% of Automatt’s profits come from upgrades, and we could see a gradual, subtle “push” to move current users to upgrade.
As mentioned above, some of their upgrades are as pricey as self-hosting, but they enough current and new users would likely stay to make it feasible.

I wonder if the 80% upgrades includes all the $3o p.a. that most seem to pay to keep Ads off their blogs. With millions of bloggers that’s an awful lot of $30’s.

Nothing left to see here. I’ll let you chat with “timethief” who is aptly named. I’m out.

If we lose this thread then it will be a shame … the topic is so much more important. And then we ALL lose the opportunity to offer our suggestions.
The topic is the new stats page … and some very clear suggestions have been given. I would think that the easiest would be to restore a better use of space to control the issue we ALL agree on … the excessive scrolling. I am happy to see the expanded number of daily visitors columns has returned and that the visitor/view ratio will soon follow. That is important to some bloggers such as myself … who offer multiple downloads on the main blog page.

What makes the WordPress community strong compared to other communities I am active in, is indeed the fact that the behaviour is more matured here. It would be sad if we lose this idea.
Different minds, different opinions.
Would be cool if we calm down :) Offence to individuals is counterproductive. You don’t have to agree with anybody, I don’t too, but what we all should do is respecting each other, even if there are different opinions. This really made our community a friendly place. I don’t want to offend you. We all can benefit from it if we stay friendly :)
Anybody wants hugs? I share them today, yes anybody :) Let’s smile :)

I know you are frustrated and having a place to vent those frustrations, as well as to share ideas on how to make this feature better, is important, so I’ve deleted the posts with personal attacks and am leaving this thread open for now. If anyone posts additional personal attacks (or other violations of the Community Standards) here the thread will be closed.
-
@fionamcquarrie – Mine was too. I tweeted at them and will continue to do so. They’re censoring their users. I asked a simple comparison question, which is allowed and others had asked questions too.

@lizthefair
Granted the world is full of craziness but I want it on the record that the blogger who launched the nasty personal attacks against me here that you removed and I have no history at all. I have never directly communicated with her on a blog, in a social network, in a support forum thread or anywhere else. I expect that Staff have acted to enforce the policy in the sticky post at the head of these support forums.Violating these Community Standards may result in your ability to post in the forums being temporarily or permanently suspended. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/wordpresscom-forums-community-standards?replies=1

Suspending an individual (preferably having being given a warning) for real abuse is certainly better than penalising all by closing a topic which, at the same time, leaves WP without useful feedback.
Nevertheless, I am glad to see that forum members persuaded tamaratattles to leave anyway. That’s one of things that community is all about.

An Appeal for Reason ( a copy of a reply to Matt Mullenweg’s comment on an earlier post) is posted here:-
https://freedfromtime.wordpress.com/2015/02/02/wp-changes-an-appeal-to-reason/I’ll it there for a few days and see if that can do any good.

@grahaminhats
Rather than posting off-topic here in a stats page feedback thread, if you would like to make your suggestion on policy enforcement of the WordPress.com Forums Community Standards in the Ideas Forum for Staff to take under consideration then here’s the link for you to use https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/ideas. -
@timethief
This entirely pertinent to topic (it’s what it’s all about) and it is for members to decide whether it is of interest to them or not. No other has objected therefore you are alone in your view.
