Stats Classics: How to set?

@grahaminhats
As far as I know we all adults here who have not anointed either you or me as a spokesperson on our behalf, and that means that you do not speak for anyone other than yourself and the same can be said of me.If you don’t want Staff to consider your suggestion for policy change that would indeed impact all threads posted here and not just this one that you are intent on nurturing then don’t post a thread in the Ideas Forum.

Para 1: Exactly so. Except, there is lot of support on my blog.
Para 2: To quote Matt Mullenweg in a comment on my blog “If you feel like bothering someone will be productive, you are welcome to direct it all at me instead of anyone else at Automattic”. Therefore ~
-
Matt had this to say in Grahaminhats’s blog: “We know that for the vast majority things are better than they were before, but for subsets of use cases or people things might get worse before they get better.”
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard intimations of widespread support for the new interface, yet Matt and the others haven’t provided concrete evidence to support these assertions. How do they know that the experience is improved, and perhaps more importantly, how do they define a “user” in the first place?
Farmerbob made an excellent point in the same discussion when he differentiated between content creators and content consumers. What we’re seeing is likely a concerted effort to draw in consumers at the expense of the creators.
-
@fjordaniv .. I think you’ve nailed the problem right on the head. There is no concrete evidence I can find anywhere of support for the new stats page … including a couple of blogs from WordPress developers which seem to allow comments for a very very short time … I can count on the fingers of both hands the number of pro versus con comments.
Content creators should be priority. And a one line tweet isn’t “content” by any definition. But I can’t understand why a “content consumer” should impact in any way on that stats “format” … although obviously they do impact on the stats themselves.
The bottom line is we need choice … and I would be pleased to listen to one cogent reason why this option seems not be being considered as we are ominously warned that the stats page will be retired sometime in the future.
Why aren’t we going to be offered a choice? That is the question which should be answered. And the facile reply that we shouldn’t be subject to “confusion” is a pat and insulting reply to bloggers.

&All
Navigation Links.
I hadn’t looked for a while and I suppose I should have. But, on at the top left WP-Admin page, My-Sites know has all the navigation links that were lost on the left side.
The only thing wrong with it is that all the Stats links go to the new UI. But one can avoid it, at least for the current blog, by using “View ALL”.
Does anybody know how long all these links have been there ?
If we can just confirmation that he old Stats pages will be retained and get Notifications fixed and a link from the Reader to WP-Admin, none of which is very difficult, then problem over and we can help WP to refine the new UI. You help us and we help you. Seems fair.

Re the WP announcement about Google analytics added to business accounts, my comment also was not approved- was “under moderation” and then disappeared.
All I had commented was my observation that the Google Analytics format looked to have a similar visual format to the recently retired wp statistics format.
There was nothing offensive or sarcastic in the tone of my comment, and I didn’t complain or rant in any way. This is very harsh not to say misleading control of comments if only gushing ones are retained. Even totally commercial sites don’t do that with their customer product reviews.
@grahaminhats: I haven’t noticed any changes in the dropdown from “my sites” on the admin page, ie dashboard. It was the removal and later restoring of the “edit” capability in the “my sites” dropdown from a page or post that I noticed (big time!)
What you said below is a little confusing to me–by “on the left side” do you mean “in the sidebar”?
on at the top left WP-Admin page, My-Sites know has all the navigation links that were lost on the left side.
Were things removed from the dashboard sidebar ? I’m in a bit of a slump on my blog lately, haven’t been posting, just editing and reformatting old posts, so I hope I haven’t missed anything…
-
Does anybody know how long all these links have been there ?
The links were added to the left-hand menu on the same day they disappeared on the right-hand menu, though some were added later, like the Edit link.
If we can just…a link from the Reader to WP-Admin…
According to the staff reply to me in this thread the admin bar drop-down menus are to be added to the New Dash’s blue admin bar as well (or the blue admin bar will replace the black one, but with the drop-downs – her reply was not entirely clear on that), so it is apparently in the works. We’ll see how it turns out in practice.

I have a lot of frustration with the new stats page, but here are the most glaring issues I can identify:
1. There is no “all time” or “summaries” view. For instance, if I wanted to see the total hits of all of my blog posts over all time, I can’t access a list like this. The closest I can get is “by year.” I’d like to be able to see a summary where I can find out which posts have gotten the most overall traffic in a rank ordered list. I also like this feature for the other sub-sections, although I use it less frequently.
2. I do miss the “best ever” one-day total, but REALLY miss the overall views grand total. I’d like to know the grand total for my blog so i can track it.
Those are are two main issues I have. The new stats page doesn’t do much in the way of summary statistics.

Dear WordPress,
I must say that I’m relieved to find out that I’m not the only one frustrated and unimpressed by the new Stats page.
In my opinion the old Stats page is better for the following reasons:
1. It allows for a quick scan (which is important when you want to move on and get blogging) to get all the pertinent information required. Less scrolling was required. Less clicking to bring up extra info.
2. Views by Country – The summary option to check top views by country for varying periods of time was an interesting and important part of the stats page. I’m fascinated in knowing where my readers are from and I can imagine for many, it’s important to know where their target market/readership actually comes from. I can’t seem to see anything more than where ‘todays’ readers come from.
3. I’m not interested in knowing:
a) How many posts I published today
b) Who the author was – there is only me, after all…
c) Videos played4. However, I would like to see at a glance:
a) Total Followers – instead of checking 2 different sections and having to count them up in my head… lazy, I know… but frustrating all the same.
b) A map of the world with more vibrant colours (like the old stats page) clearly showing views by country.
c) The scroll over bar graph at the top (like the old stats page), giving info as to how many views, visitors, title of post published that day.
d) Stats for ‘All Time’ Views and Comments.I honestly see nothing improved or beneficial in this new Stats page. It is missing way too much valuable information and is not user friendly.
Kind regards,

@ paulgordonbrown
I totally agree — the other really cool summary stat that is missing in the new stats is the ability to see a bar graph of the total life of a single post — all its pageviews over time. I check that fairly frequently, it’s really great for evaluating how, say, a promotion of an older tutorial affects its overall views (or not). Or whether a semi-viral upswing on a post has staying power, etc… -
@gatherandgraze … every issue encapulated in your post in a concise and orderly way. Perfect. Thank YOU.

I am curious if anyone knows what happened to the Shares section (where is it or why was it removed or will it be added in the future), that showed the number of shares by social network and which posts were shared et cetera, that is on the Old Stats under Totals, Followers, & Shares but not on the New Stats; and also the Spam section that is there on the Old Stats but not on the New Stats?
Thank you,
-John Jr -
Ah, a ‘constructive criticism’ thread that hasn’t been closed yet! I will refrain from posting the kind of words I shout every time I get Beep Beep Booped (that’s clearly staying, just like Jar Jar Binks), but will just mention that, apart from a few changes that were made to the “new and improved” design in response to suggestions made by users using WP these days is an incredibly frustrating experience. Who the h*ll blogs on a mobile device anyway?

All-time country views is not available in the new stats, you can use https://wordpress.com/my-stats for now and I have added your feedback to our suggestion list. Thank you for your question.

Interesting point! I’ll dig for more info and report back.
the other really cool summary stat that is missing in the new stats is the ability to see a bar graph of the total life of a single post — all its pageviews over time.
The current way to access that data would be to select “Year” at the top of the page, click on the specific year you’re looking for, and then, use the data under Posts & Pages.
Currently, there isn’t an “All-time” stat, but we’re working on adding that in!
The summary option to check top views by country for varying periods of time was an interesting and important part of the stats page. I’m fascinated in knowing where my readers are from and I can imagine for many, it’s important to know where their target market/readership actually comes from. I can’t seem to see anything more than where ‘todays’ readers come from.
If you click on the individual bar graphs of the days at the top of the page, the corresponding stats for that day should be displayed under “Countries.” So, you could see the views per country by day or use the Weeks, Months, and Years selectors at the top of the page to change the data range.
Total Followers – instead of checking 2 different sections and having to count them up in my head… lazy, I know… but frustrating all the same.
Interesting point! I’ll bring up that suggestion. Thanks!
A map of the world with more vibrant colours (like the old stats page) clearly showing views by country.
Can you elaborate on what is missing from the current Country module shown here?
The scroll over bar graph at the top (like the old stats page), giving info as to how many views, visitors, title of post published that day.
As explained above, if you click on an individual bar for a specific day, the stats will change to reflect the stats on that particular day.
Stats for ‘All Time’ Views and Comments.
Working on adding this!

Nothing can meliorate the nuisance of the incredible amount of scrolling needed. The scrolling is the main problem. I can’t believe how long it takes to go through this and that the information has been squeezed into half a page leaving the rest empty on the left hand side. This is so glaring I can’t believe it hasn’t been fixed sooner.
The map has been moved up .. but it’s HUGE and takes up so much space. Why not put it on the side in that big empty space where it’s easier to read. It’s too big and the white space is overwhelming. Compare the old sizing and the new and the problem is visible in a nano-second. We need a map … we just don’t need a full page of it.
And we need a much faster way to see days, weeks and months. The classic was perfect..
The “all time” stat is so important that I have it as a plug in on my main home page. For serious bloggers this is a must.
Please just give us the option to choose … then the problem is solved. We haven’t been given any reason for this choice being phased out other than some vague comments about “too much choice”. Which is patently silly since it’s only one choice we’d have to make. And many of us would make it without too much mental confusion.
This new format is for high school students or single character writers. Big ugly blocks strewn down the page. And the scrolling is beyond belief. I would suggest the developers take some time to scroll through a stats page twenty five times. And see what they experience.
When I worked in advertising many moons ago, one brilliant design boss made us sit through each proposed commercial twenty times in succession to locate the “irritants” as well as errors. No better way to test it. After twenty reps, it was either a go or a dump. I would ask that the Word Press developers try this with the new stats format.
