Stats, clicks and referrer question.

  • Unknown's avatar

I have two blogs that are linked together. I can see if people click a link to visit the other blog, but the other blog doesn’t show the first website as a “referrer”. I am clearly having people click on a link on my website http://www.minnesotasportingjournal.com (or mnsportingjournal.wordpress.com) And they are going to http://www.watsonhunting.com (or watsonhuntingcamp.wordpress.com) I’m getting the “click” credit on the minnesota sporting journal site, but the watson hunting camp site isn’t showing any clicks coming from the mnsj site. Shouldn’t that be seen? Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

It looks like for each of your sites you are using some sort of domain forwarding with masking technique, wherein your domain creates an iframe through which your site is loaded. You can tell this because for each of your sites, they remain as “www.minnesotasportingjournal.com” and “www.watsonhunting.com” and in WordPress.com, domains have the www removed when the domain is loaded.

The lack of referrer which you’re asking about is because of the way in which these iframes are loaded. Iframes can interfere with several things on your site in fact (such as linking correctly to the backend Dashboard, for example). While we do not expressly forbid using your domain this way, we strongly recommend against it for just this reason, as we cannot fix anything that comes up broken as a result.

Let me know if you’d like any information about mapping your domain to WordPress.com in the way in which we recommend!

I think I’ve got it set up as a stealth mode so that my custom domain shows at all times, for professional reasons.

If I took that off so that my visitors saw the wp blog address, do you think that would solve it?

  • Unknown's avatar

If you’d like your custom domain to show all the time, and have everything like your stats work as expected, you can map it to your blog with our domain mapping upgrade. We have a guide for that here: Map an Existing Domain

If you’d like help getting that set up just let us know and we can walk you through the process. :)

But if you decide to just remove the domain forwarding so visitors see the free WordPress.com address for your blog, that should also do the trick. Please let me know if you have any questions about that!

Sounds good, thanks for the help!

Does this mean that any site that I’m referring people to might not be showing clicks from my wordpress site?

If so, I’d like to get this changed as soon as possible.

If I change everything over, will there be some downtime with the website and email? I’d prefer to make it as seamless as possible.

Also, does anyone know if I can insert conversion tracking?

    Hi there,

    Please see below:

Does this mean that any site that I’m referring people to might not be showing clicks from my wordpress site?

If someone clicks a link from your site to be navigated to another site, the click should appear in two places:

    1. On your stats page under “Clicks”
    2. On the other peron’s stats page as a “Referrer”. This means that a user was referred to their site through you.

Does that help to clarify a bit more?

If I change everything over, will there be some downtime with the website and email? I’d prefer to make it as seamless as possible.

Provided you follow the instructions below regarding mapping your domain, the transition should be pretty easy. The biggest step is changing the name servers on your domain and pointing them to WordPress.com. That change can take some time to propagate, but you shouldn’t experience much site downtime:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

As for your email address, if you currently have a custom email address setup on your domain, you will need to make sure you add the email records to WordPress.com as mentioned here:

    Manage Your DNS Records

Provided you do this immediately, your email shouldn’t be down for long at all.

Also, does anyone know if I can insert conversion tracking?

Can you explain a bit more about what you’re referring to? If you’re referring to adding a script to your blog or installing something like Google Analytics, that won’t be possible. However, let me know a bit more so we can be sure!

My question regarding referrers was in reference to my issue previously of the referring site not getting the credit because they were both wordpress sites using domain stealth. I was wondering if a site not that is not on wordpress would see the referring clicks or not.

As far as downtime goes, when you say “not much” downtime, do mean, minutes? Hours? Days? I know it could be 72 hours and I really don’t want it to be that long…but if it has to be, I need to schedule it at the right time.

I have a client that wants to track conversions from my website. Apparently it involves code…was hoping I could just put that into an html widget along with html code from a graphic that I have in my library.

    Hi there,

My question regarding referrers was in reference to my issue previously of the referring site not getting the credit because they were both wordpress sites using domain stealth. I was wondering if a site not that is not on wordpress would see the referring clicks or not.

Yes, domain cloaking or domain stealth will mess with the referrer stats when readers click to visit a site from your URL. The main way to make sure this works correctly is by setting up the domain mapping.

As far as downtime goes, when you say “not much” downtime, do mean, minutes? Hours? Days?

Oh no! It should be several hours at most. If you setup the mapping and then change the name servers right away, it should only take a few minutes maybe. You’ll likely just need to clear your browser’s cache as explained here:

    Solve Common Browser Issues

However, you certainly shouldn’t experience hours or days of downtime provided the name servers are changed immediately.

The custom email address should work in the same fashion (minutes or one to two hours at most). The key here is just make sure we have the right DNS records to enter in. Just make sure to record those DNS records from your current host so we can get them right the first time!

I have a client that wants to track conversions from my website. Apparently it involves code…was hoping I could just put that into an html widget along with html code from a graphic that I have in my library.

This depends on what kind of HTML tags they’re using. We block certain HTML tags as described here:

    Add Code to Your Site

Does the HTML code contain HTML tags like “form” and “script”?

I changed the DNS records and mapped the custom domain and everything worked within a few minutes.

Then, just now, the home page has disappeared. I added new post and when it went up, the home page said “not found”.

Now I can’t get to my home page with either the custom domain or the wp domain.

I tried resetting my safari and clearing my cache…

  • Unknown's avatar

Well it might just be on my end. I can’t get to my homepage now, but I was able to get someone else to see it with my latest post. My stats even changed since then, so it’s clearly just my computer.

I’ll try clearing the cache again to see if that works.

  • Unknown's avatar

Well, now it seems to be working again…that was weird.

  • Unknown's avatar

The domain appears to be working correctly on my side now as well. It looks like you were able to add your email records. Can you confirm that your email is working correctly also?

  • Unknown's avatar

The email never stopped working. The website seemed to work for everyone but me, so I don’t know if it was a cache issue on my end or not, but it went in and out throughout the whole day yesterday. It seemed like when I’d use a new wifi source that I’d have problems again.

Seems to be working again now though, so hopefully we’re good from here on out.

    Thanks for the help!

Not a problem! Please let me know if you need anything else.
