Stats Confusion
-
Hi
Firstly, a huge thank you to you guys at WordPress.
My question:
I’m curious to know something about the info on the stats page.
It says that today there have been 49 views so far, but when I add up the number of views for the posts listed under ‘Top Posts and Pages’ the total number of views comes to 22. The top page has had 13 views, the second, 3, then 2, 1, 1, 1, 1.
Where do the extra 27 come into the equation?
As you can see it’s just a little curiosity, but I’m a curious person.
Many thanks,
Manapo

On your stats page click on the “Top Posts and Pages” link and you will see the entire list. You are only seeing a short list by default.

For a second I thought ‘DOH!’, but then I clicked on “Top Posts and Pages” and the same list came up. Still only 22 views….

stats for posts and pages do not equate with the hits you get for the day because it doesn’t include hits to your main page. it only counts hits to your specific posts or pages, that’s why.

Now I have a question. How are Most Active posts determined? They’re all the same as Top Posts, but the numbers are COMPLETELY different. Is Most Active just for one week or something?
Example:Top Posts
Post A, 206,717 views
Post B, 77,010 views
Post C, 60,282 views
——————————————————-
Most ActivePost A, 4,538 views
Post C, 1,643 views
Post B, 1,077 views
-
Maybe most active has a larger number of comments:viewers ration than the top views?
Example:
Post A has 100 views and 1 comment
Post B has 50 views and 10 comments..
I would consider post B more active in that sense…
Anyway that’s my pure guess when I noticed the same thing so it could be something else.
Cheers!

No, the THIRD post on that list has had over 100 comments this week. The first on that list has had no comments for almost a year.

FWIW, my incoming links have never, ever matched the numbers next to posts. I think some links passed around in email aren’t counted. Also, some search engine results. I don’t worry about it. As long as there are readers, I’m happy. (Readership always drops on weekends, too.)

Firstly, THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge and making my introduction to WordPress so much easier.
I understand the limitations of the stats software – but one thing still confuses me.
In the past week or so (my first week of blogging) I have had the exact same number of page views on two consecutive days – three times.
In other words, Monday and Tuesday’s numbers were identical – Wednesdays were different – Thursday and fridays numbers were also identical – Saturday and sundays were not – Then Monday and Tuesdays numbers were identical again.
I am not a big believer in cosidences; so whats’s going on here?
Any ideas?

It’s not uncommon. The higher the total number of hits, the greater the likelihood that they’ll vary slightly, since it’s a smaller percentage variation. Yet…I had exactly the same number of hits today as I did one day last week, 2807.
The smaller the number of hits, the higher the likelihood of the same number.

Thanks Raincoaster!
I have to say, after a week of blogging and using the WordPress interface, the stats package is my only real let-down. I hope they improve it.
Thanks again,
Jim

If you’ve got specific requests, make them directly to staff during their office hours. They do have fuller stats info on our blogs than we’re able to see, and requests have been made for WP.com to work with other stat packages than just sitemeter, etc, but this is what we have for now.
