Stats displaying incorrectly?

My stats are not displaying correctly for my blog. When I go to view my stats it says I have 12 or 13 views but only 1 or 2 visitors. Underneath that it says Owner: (my username) and Veiws: and it usually says anywhere from 7 to 11. Is it telling me I contributed 7+ of those views? The reason I ask is because A) it’s never counted my views before this and B) I never go on my own blog unless it’s in the app editing a post, I never just view it on a browser. Please help this is so confusing and it’s making it difficult to get an accurate idea of how viewed my blog actually is!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. Where do you see it say Owner? I checked both the classic and new stats pages for my site and don’t see that label anywhere. Could you perhaps provide a screenshot? Your own views while logged in should not be counted on a public blog.

The discrepancy between views and visitors is completely normal. Visitors refer to each unique IP address that accesses your blog. Views refer to each page that is loaded or reloaded by a particular IP accessing your site. In other words, if you have two visitors and thirteen views, it means two computers accessed your site, and between the two of them they viewed thirteen different posts or pages on your site.

That said, stats accuracy is a myth. Only computers that directly access your site are counted. But people viewing your blog via the Reader, RSS feed readers and email notifications aren’t counted at all. Also keep in mind that people can like, comment and reblog your posts directly from the Reader, which won’t generate a pageview in your stats either.

You can read this support doc for detailed information on how stats are calculated. https://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/

Unfourtunately I cannot provide a screenshot as I blog from my Android, which is inconvieniant. However, I went back and checked again and in the WordPress app in the stats tab, under the box that’s labelled “Authors” it has two columns one that says “Author” and one that says “views” and under views it always says like 7 or 11.

I never view my blog not logged in, ever. Yes, I know I purposely have visitors stats turned on also so I can see unique views. Does this give any insight?

  • Ah, okay. The Author stats you see there actually only becomes useful if you blog has more than one author. Just like you have stats showing how many times each individual post have been viewed, you have stats showing how many times posts by each individual author has been viewed.

In other words, if it shows 7 views next to you as author, it means 7 posts written by you specifically has been viewed. The remainder of the views to make up the total views are from people viewing other areas, like the home page, static pages, search results or archive pages, which aren’t directly connected to you as author.

Is there anyway to shut that off? I’m the only author.

  • I’m afraid not. On the stats pages in a browser you can collapse stats you’re not interested in, but the app doesn’t have that option.
