Stats Feedback

lrhodes4, please see my comment: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/stats-feedback/page/2?replies=59#post-2824463

The really old “classic” Stats page does have the Summaries, and Yesterday links.

I use the Epic browser and maybe it gives a better view of the interior of WordPress. Many browsers are no longer provide updates for operating systems older than Windows 8.1. The exception is Epic and Opera, but Epic is more secure and intelligent.
    https://www.epicbrowser.com/

The classic administration and stats view doesn’t have to be accessed through special links but I will place the links in the body of this comment in case your browser blocks your view. Consider trying Epic if it does.

    In the reader,
    https://wordpress.com/

click on “my site” (left of “reader” tab)
    https://wordpress.com/stats/insights/your blog name.wordpress.com

    Scroll down to “WP Admin”
    https://your blog name/wp-admin/
and click to go directly to the original classic dashboard.
    https://your blog name/wp-admin/index.php

Once you are there, scroll down the dashboard to “site stats” and you will see the original stats page intact.
    https://your blog name/wp-admin/index.php?page=stats

There are no extra steps to take to get there. It’s really quite simple.

The only problem is no support staff member took the time to explain this to anyone. It would have relieved many concerns and anxieties if they had.

As for the new reader, I actually find if more efficient and attractive.

Thank you so much for providing such clear and easy steps to get back to viewing WordPress stats in a much more intuitive manner! Much appreciated. Happy Holidays! michaelconen.wordpress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry but I can’t follow those instructions. Please would you explain button by button just precisely what I need to do to bring the old stats back (these new ones are dreadful) – and please keep it real simple.

    To wallofcontroversy,

https://yourblogname.wordpress.com/wp-admin/index.php?page=stats (insert your blog’s name before wordpress.com in the link).

I highly recommend bookmarking that link in your browser.

For a redirect script using Greasemonkey, see The Penguin’s blog post: https://tpenguinltg.wordpress.com/2016/12/24/classic-stats-redirect-script-v2-released/

If you install this user script, you don’t have to do anything else.

    See: https://dandelionsalad.wordpress.com/2015/04/06/where-are-the-stats-pages-on-wordpress-com-blogs-by-lo/

Although in that post you’ll have to scroll down to “How to find the really old, classic Stats Page:” because WP removed the old Blue Stats Page entirely.

Interesting to see no staff comments here despite the “We’ll be listening” in the opening post, especially in light of this final paragraph in a recent comment in the forum answering an unrelated question:

…The only recent changes that were made was the My Sites menu being updated, and the old /my-stats page being retired. Neither of these changes are going to be rolled back, but if there are specific features you’re missing, please let us know what they are and we will look into what’s feasible to add and what’s not.

No official comments in this thread really doesn’t make it seem as though any staff are listening, or will make any changes at all.

I used to use the stats graphic at the top left of the screen all the time to see my hourly views. It couldn’t be so hard to leave it there, surely?

As people are leaving traditional blogging in droves and moving over to YouTube and Instagram, WordPress should be working to keep paying customers, not alienate them.

I have had paid options for three domains for years and years now but this year I think will be my last.

    @All – Information

There are several methods of accessing the old system (Editor, Stats etc.). I found this useful and simple to use.

    https://freedfromtime.wordpress.com/2016/12/28/wordpress-changes-2016-and-2017-accessing-the-old-system/

Any attempt by WP to further damage/limit the old system will surely be seen as an act of destructive belligerence by WP against customers.

    @All – Information

Behind the scenes, the new User Interface is based upon the use of the Rest-API system. This has profound implications for the future. More:-

Unrelated to the stats page, but related to the ongoing deconstruction… now it’s not possible anymore to follow blogs, as they removed all ways to follow a blog directly. As it seems, the only left way to follow a blog is now by opening the blog in the reader, there is still a follow button. What is going on here? This is a complete deconstruction happening right here.

  • Unknown's avatar

Nope, I was wrong, the follow link is only missing on one blog I visited. Tried with a different blog and there is a follow link in the small menu.

    @thedangerousdream

I installed the browser you recommended and it made a significant difference.

When I found the pages you pointed out it was heartening to see them still available.

As long as this doesn’t change I can manage my work efficiently.

    As @michaelconen said,

Thank you so much for providing such clear and easy steps to get back to viewing WordPress stats in a much more intuitive manner!

@dandelionsalad – I finally reluctantly checked out the OLD old stats page again (as opposed to the now unavailable “medium-old” stats page) since you pointed out that it does have links to week/month/year and all-time summaries. It does seem better than the new stats. Thanks!

@thedangerousdream – re your instructions for accessing the wp-admin dashboard via the “my sites” drop-down: I just found out that it’s only us old-time wp users who still even have that link to the wp-admin dashboard in our my-sites dropdown! (it recently moved way down to the bottom of my drop-down)

Any wp user who signed up in the last year (or two?) won’t see that link. They can only save the url and bookmark it in order to get to their wp-admin dashboard. That classic wp dashboard is being phased out for one that is (so far) more limited, but more aligned visually with the new Calypso dashboard. (that whole new WP user interface using Javascript.) We’ll all lose the classic admin dashboard eventually, I suppose.

As grahaminhats says, that new interface must be what’s driving all these changes the last couple of years (to editor, stats page, reader), rather than simply trying to make things more visually appealing for mobil devices… (esp since the changes often DIDN’T seem to be visually better on those devices!)

@thedangerousdream, thank you for the suggestion of using Epic as a browser. It takes privacy online very seriously. I highly recommend it, too.

@ingridcc, I always preferred the “classic” really old Stats page in the WP-Amin pages. It’s the best alternative to the “new, not-improved” blue Stats Page, imo.

  • Hi folks, we aren’t here to argue, we’re here to listen. We’re doing our best to glean stats feature requests from the thread and will continue to do so. Thanks!

  • @listolar you mentioned it’s harder to get basic data but did not specify which basic data you’re having to click to get. It sounds like you have specific feedback that can be helpful but I’m not sure what exactly to put in the feature request. Can you clarify what data you’re hoping to access in fewer clicks?

  • @thisbugslifedotcom

I used to use the stats graphic at the top left of the screen all the time to see my hourly views.

Noting this as a request. Thanks :)

  • Unknown's avatar

@supernovia, it is nice to see you back on here. Speaking for myself, though I imagine many people would agree, we are not here to argue either. However, when WP has repeatedly ignored and disregarded us, we are frustrated. Furthermore, and perhaps most importantly, there is no communication coming from WP. No warning that the old stats page was going to be taken away, no explanation as to why. This, coupled with the unnecessary suspension of the old format, makes WP appear to be intentionally antagonizing users who overwhelmingly prefer the old format.

Some explaining and some communication would go a long way in ameliorating the angst over this issue.

Again, some question that have gone unanswered:

    1. Why was the old stats page removed? What harming was it doing that necessitated its removal?

    2. You are asking for feedback. For what exactly? Are changes coming to the new, unpopular stats page?

That is just the tip of the iceberg, but it would certainly help. Personally, if visitor bars and the international map were added to the old, old stats page and then left alone, I would be happy.

Hopefully some sort of compromise can be reached.

  • Unknown's avatar

@supernovia, it’s good to see a staff person here, and it’s nice that you’re gathering suggestions, but you had what many of us consider a perfectly workableit stats page. Is there any reason that the old stats page can’t be put back up so that people who like it can go on using it? Tweak the new one however you like, but for the love of mike, put the old one back up.

  • @gprutter thank you for the clear and thoughtful feedback. I’m trying to get each part noted:

    1. A link to the tables from the graphs

Can you clarify this one? There are a lot of tables and graphs, but if I can get exactly what you’re after I’ll file the request.

    2. A link to the summaries for each section (top posts, referrers, etc) – showing the top of each for the last week, month, etc

Can you clarify this too? If you click on any week / month / etc. you should still be able to see the top posts, etc.

    3. All-time data available as part of all of those summaries and tables

    Noted! Thanks.

    4. Wider bars on the day graphs (if they were as thick as the weeks graph they would be much better)

We actually had wide bars on days at one point, but we got a lot of feedback asking for narrower bars / more days.

    5. Wider boxes for the individual sections

Can you clarify which boxes, or what data you’re struggling to see in the narrower boxes?

    6. Faster loading times for the stats

We’ll always work on optimization: can you clarify how long it’s taking though just in case you’re actually experiencing a bug?

    7. Easy access to the forums, etc (how are you meant to get to them at the moment?)

Do you mean from the stats page or from another part of Calypso? If you head to the question mark button on the bar on the left (close to the bottom) you’ll always be able to find help options for your account, including info from the forums. If you’ve got more feedback on this and it isn’t directly related to stats, can you open a new thread and modlook it? By the way you can always access them at en.forums.wordpress.com

    8. Do the graphs on the new page update in real time? If not, giving the time that the data has been accessed, rather than just the date would also be useful.

It’s not REAL real time (that would really slow things down), but close to it. I’ve made a request for a timestamp.

    9. On the insights page – this would be more useful if you could click on a square in the Posting Activity and see the Post Summary for that post, rather than just the latest one (and I’m still not quite sure how useful that would actually be…)

Do you mean an all-time view for the posts made on that day (much like what you see if you click a top post from another view?). I think that would be cool too. We’d have to sort out how to display more than one post at a time, but I like that. Request filed.

    10. Also on Insights – Most popular day and hour would be a lot more useful if you gave us the rest of the data (even 2 pie charts – day & time- would be more useful that what you’ve currently got!)

Do you mean an hourly view or can you clarify this one too? I just want to be sure to file it right. :)

    11. Make the sections on all the pages rearrangeable and able to save these preferences. Actually I’d prefer it if we could customise a page so that we could incorporate bits from all the current pages into one – which I could access by default.

    Noted, thanks

    12. Fewer clicks to get at things (rather than having to wade through from all the summaries).

Can you clarify which things you’re needing in fewer clicks?

    13. I’d still quite like an explanation as to why you’ve removed easy access to the more detailed data in the first place?

Trying to maintain so many versions of code not only takes significant time and resources that could be put to other use, it also limits new feature development, because new features can can break things in old code. Sometimes I wish software could be more like so many physical items we use, like classic cars, where it’s just a matter of keeping some old parts available. Since it really isn’t, we’ll keep trying to provide the best experience we can for as many people as possible. Thanks for understanding!
