Stats look funny -Home Page Views

Hi there, just today and yesterday I started getting a large % of views on my home/archives page, with no referrer. This is abnormal because my home page is a gallery of posts–with just photos and title. For the life of me, I can’t figure out why that would happen. I drive traffic w/ a post to my site every few weeks and don’t typically get that much traffic to the main page w/out a reason. I had been getting semalt referrers prior to this, and marked Semalt as spam 2 days ago and wonder if that may be part of the issue. If you can help or give me any thoughts on why this would be the case, I would appreciate it.

    Hi there Robin!

When I look at your stats for March 12 & 13, which I believe were the days in question, I see the large numbers of referred views are coming from Facebook. I also see that about a week ago that you set up your site with the Publicize to Facebook option. I suspect this accounts for the large number of visits on those days.

Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks much and happy blogging!

Hi there, yes, there were a bunch from Facebook, but they were referred to my recent post Mourning the end of the Chapter… not necessarily to the home page, and there is a large % of visits directly to that home page where I’m not seeing why they would go there. Some do regularly after viewing a post, but not many.

This is happening today too, where I have 20 directly to the homepage w/no referrers.

On the 12th, it looks more normal: traffic driven to the post by facebook and very few home page views.

On the 13th, the # with referrers matches up well to those who viewed my post, but then I had a 88 to the home page, a much bigger % than normal.

On the 14th, I had 76 to the home page when only 26 were driven by facebook to my post.

Where are the rest of the views coming from?

Based on what typically happens, like I said before, most people are driven to a post, not to the home page, like on the 12th.

I think something spammy is happening to my stats.

If you could help shed some light on this, that would be great.

Thanks so much for your help, Robin

    Hi again, Robin!

Ah yes, I see those stats to your home page. Thanks very much for these details.

We do run some spam filtering for referrers before we show them to you, but occasionally results like this slip through.

We’re working on some tools that will allow blog owners to let us know about these sorts of results. I can’t give you a date for their ability, but rest assured that we’re aware of the problem and think that it’s just as frustrating as you do. :)

Let me know if you have any other questions.
