stats not working

  • Unknown's avatar

For the last 3-4 days, my stats are not working properly and I don’t have much faith in WordPress support. Last time I had an issue (to do with photos in the cubic theme) it was not resolved just lots of denials even though there were many others making the same complaint.

On a separate issue editing a post is way, way, too complicated…too many different ways to edit rather than one useable clean and easy to understand method. The designers keep fixing things that are not broken and just adding to the clutter.

Getting back to my current complaint………
Today, for instance, I have had (10.29am GMT) 1,160 views but only 1 visitor?
Normally, get around 1,700 visitors per day that view around 2.7pages each. Today I have had 1 visitor viewing 1,160 pages which is barmy and obviously wrong.

The other day there was also a problem with http://www.addtoany.com widget that seemed to have been hacked making it impossible to share with Stumbleupon and others.
I don’t whether that is an Add to Any problem or WordPress?

  • Hi there,

We are aware of the stats issue and are working to fix it. Can you please subscribe to this thread to be notified when we have an update:
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/stats-not-correct-3

I can understand that having the two editors can be confusing, but can you please tell me exactly what it is you’re finding complicated? The new editor was created in an effort to forestall the WP-Admin editor becoming outdated, which it will become eventually, but there is certainly still room for improvement. If you have any feedback on how we can improve it I’d gladly pass it along to the team.

While you can add the Addtoany button under the Sharing Settings on your site, that service does not form part of WordPress.com and is not officially supported by us like the standard sharing buttons you’d find in your settings. If their button is no longer working, please report it to their support so they can fix it.

After my last message my stats got corrected (I presume someone helped me so thank you).
Here is my blog I need help with.
    Chef Kevin Ashton

    8th January
The stats have gone crazy again and so am I!!!
Every time I flirt with the notion of upgrading my blogs so I can get greater control and sell advertising a problem comes along which is very very off putting.

The overall appearance of my WordPress blogs is truly great but behind the scenes seems to a bolted on mess. The recent revamping of the editor hasn’t cleaned it up or given greater control to the user. No, that would be way to simple. Now there seem to be 3-4 variations of the editor, unclear paths of how you arrive at each one. In one editor I can type the size of photo I wish to use. In another, I now have to drag the box at the corner which is very inaccurate.
If I set the size of the photo to say 750 it does not always show in the preview. In summary can’t you WordPress boffins get together and streamline WordPress so it can finally reach its potential? And reverse this slow march towards reinventing a square wheel?

  • Hi there,

We are aware of the stats issue and are working on it. We will update in this thread once it is fixed: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/visitor-count-appears-to-be-not-working-1

Now there seem to be 3-4 variations of the editor, unclear paths of how you arrive at each one.

There are only two post and two page editors: The editor at https://wordpress.com/post can be reached via My Sites ->Posts ->Add, the New Post button in the admin bar, and the Edit link that appears on your posts when you view your own site.

Then there is the original WP-Admin editor. To reach that editor, go to the WP-Admin dashbaord (http://wannabetvchefblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/), and click on Posts in the menu.

The new editor was updated to a new version in November, but the way to reach the editors hasn’t changed since at least March last year.

In one editor I can type the size of photo I wish to use. In another, I now have to drag the box at the corner which is very inaccurate.

This is one of the things we are working on for the next version of the new editor. The WP-Admin editor isn’t going away, so you’re welcome to keep using that if you prefer in the meantime.

If I set the size of the photo to say 750 it does not always show in the preview.

Can you please expand on this? Where do you set the size of the photo? In settings or in the WP-Admin editor? And what do you mean by “it does not always show in the preview”? Does the photo not appear in the preview? If you have a draft post where this is happening, please provide the link or the post title so I can take a look.

In summary can’t you WordPress boffins get together and streamline WordPress so it can finally reach its potential? And reverse this slow march towards reinventing a square wheel?

Streamlining is exactly what we are trying to do. The internet and the programming languages it uses have changed vastly over the past few years, and to keep up with these changes it has been necessary to completely reinvent how WordPress.com is built and works. You can read a bit more about why we’re doing this here:
    https://developer.wordpress.com/2015/11/23/the-story-behind-the-new-wordpress-com/

We know it is disruptive right now, but we are working very hard to get the major changes made as fast as possible. If there is a specific feature that’s not working, that you’re missing, or that you think we should add, please let us know.

Again the stats were fixed on around Jan 8-9th and were fine again but stopped working correctly on January 16th.

They are not recording the true volume of traffic.
Here is my main blog address.
    https://wannabetvchefblog.wordpress.com/

I think the stats are not working on my other blogs either
    https://cheapandeasystudentrecipes.wordpress.com/
    https://wannabetvchefoldblogposts.wordpress.com/

Why hasn’t this problem been fixed properly?
It certainly doesn’t fill me with confidence about the WordPress platform. I get the feeling I will be writing another post about stats not working in a week or two.

  • Hi there,

The stats pages for all three those sites look normal to me. What makes you think the stats are not working?

I do see you have had a drop in traffic on all three those sites, but that’s not a stats problem. Traffic fluctuates over time and it’s common for a site to have views in the thousands one week, and struggling to hit 100 the next.

You are so totally wrong, the stats are still not working!
I have sent a lot of traffic to my site today to test if the stats are now working properly and they are most definitely not.

If you look back since last April 23rd when I first started my main blog
    https://wannabetvchefblog.wordpress.com/
The only periods when my traffic has gone down is when WordPress has had a problem with the stats.

I tried contacting your colleagues via twitter and they said there is an ongoing problem with stats are are trying to fix it.
How can I have confidence about your platform and upgrade my account when the basics don’t work?

I’m not a technical wizard but my site should have recorded at least 500 visitors/ 1000 hits by this point in the day.
I have 52,847 followers via networked blogs
So the idea that my site only got 264 visitors so far today is hard to believe. I have been blogging since February 2006 and my old now defunt blog got 20,500,00 page views up until November 2015.

My current blogs has had 773,689 hits since April 23rd 2015 so again the drop off in the last 4-5 days has been too dramatic to be just a slow down in traffic.
    Very frustrated.

    Kevin Ashton

  • I have sent a lot of traffic to my site today to test if the stats are now working properly and they are most definitely not.

Can you please expand on this? How exactly are you sending traffic to your site?

The recurring problem we’ve been having concerns the unique visitor counts only. There has been no problems recently with the total view stats, but I’m asking our developers to check if there might be a problem with your site specifically.

  • Unknown's avatar

I tested the site using a traffic exchange and according to their stats
total so far to page from Chef Kevin Ashton 3,883 visits today Jan 22nd 2016. I have enclose a link to screenshot I took and then unloaded to my flickr account.
    Autosurf traffic test

  • I have heard back from our developers, and the issue here is that we made a change recently so that the stats now only shows views of people actually viewing a page, and it no longer counts it as a view when a page loads in the background, a minimized tab, or a hidden iframe. If the traffic exchange site uses these methods, those views will no longer be counted.

So there is nothing wrong with your stats. But it’s only showing actual page views now, and not views generated by the traffic exchange site.
