Stats page not registering traffic from bit.ly. (Or am I missing something?)

  Hi there

  I looks like my stats page is not registering traffic via url’s shortened using bit.ly.

  I copied the url of my latest post and shortened it with bit.ly (http://bit.ly). I then copied that shortened url into a Twitter post.

  On my bit.ly homepage I can see how many times the link has been clicked (quite a few times). My WordPress blog stats page doesn’t seem to be registering those clicks.

  To make sure I got a friend to click on the link on my Twitter page. It worked and she was taken to my WordPress blog. I checked my stats before and after she clicked. There was no change.

  Any ideas?

  bit.ly does not register stats on wordpress, which is why we have wp.me, which does.

  bit.ly counts many bogus hits from scripts and bots. WordPress.com stats only records views from people.

  WordPress stats aren’t always updated immediately – that might be why you didn’t see your friend’s hit.

  Thanks, raptortech. I searched wp.me and found out I can get a short link at the top of my post edit page. So simple!

  And, tellyworth, I’m aware that bit.ly’s stats are not really reliable. I’ve shortened a link before and within a 10th of a second have recorded about 30 hits!

  BTW: bit.ly will show all stats to the URLin question, not just to the shortcut you created yourself (ie. any otehr Bit.ly links autogenerated by say Twitter, etc to the same URL)….but yeah it seems that some of these URL shortcut services are more prone to ‘bots’ – but it would still be nice to see those stats displayed (bots and all) just for comparison. perhaps as a non-included ‘referer’ ?
