steps to achieve permalinks in wordpress 2.7?

  can anybody please tell me detailed steps to add the permalinks in blog, am try to achieve this but unable to do, its urgent please help me in this issue. i have tried Custom Structure option ie /%postname%/ ?

  You have permalinks built in. What did you want to add/change them to?

  At wordpress.COM, we do not have the option to change the permalink structure. That option is only for self-hosted blogs using the software from wordpress.ORG.

  The permalink structure used here is designed to be as SEF (Search Engine Friendly) as possible.
