Still getting followers on an old blog

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I’ve migrated my wordpress.com “blog.karensworld-writer.co.uk” to self-hosted wordpress (karensworld-writer.co.uk) and connected the new site via Jetpack. The domain “blog.karensworld-writer.co.uk” is also forwarded to the new one.

However, I’m still getting some new Followers on the old blog. Why is this happening and what can I do to make sure they only follow the new blog.

    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi –

When did you finish getting things set up with the transition? I visited your site and it is properly redirecting as you have mentioned here.

Hi, it’s been about a month. It all works fine on the site, and redirects work perfectly, but since then, and after migrating the followers to the new site, I’ve had 24 new followers to the old blog, one as recent as yesterday.
Is it possible these are coming from the reader, and the posts under the old url are still visible there?

Hi, I see the Jetpack follow button in your sidebar. That comes from WordPress and Jetpack, so people can click that to follow your site.

People can also follow your site from the Reader, but they will be following your new site, not the old url.

Were were you seeing the new followers?

When I log into wordpress.com, and click on My Sites, I am seeing two sites, the old blog, and new Jetpack connected blog.

If I go to Stats, and then click on followers, I see a list of followers. A month ago I migrated all followers from the old blog to the new blog. So the old blog had zero followers, and the new blog now had around 1,200 or so inherited from the old.

As of today, there are 24 followers of the old blog, up from zero since the migration. With a new follow as recent as yesterday.

    I hope that helps.

  • I’v’e checked in with our Jetpack team just to make sure I wasn’t missing anything odd that could be going on. Somehow, folks are getting to your old site.

The redirect indeed is set up correctly. I’ve also removed an old mapping upgrade that wasn’t needed (this could help).

To keep folks from following the old site go ahead and mark it to be private. See here:

Ok thanks. I’ll give that a try.

Another question, If I migrate these followers (the 24 from the old blog) to the new site (currently at 1200+ followers), will I lose any of the followers from the new site? or will they just be added?

No, it will simply add the follower that are on the old account to the new one. It will not affect the followers that have already been moved over.
