Still no free way to write wide posts?

  • Unknown's avatar

My blog posts take 1/3rd of the screen. At the same time, I have serious trouble with source code fragments: I have to struggle to make the lines short enough to avoid scroll bar or word wrapping (both are very bad for code presentation).

It seems that there is some way to make “pages” wide enough (aka “full width no sidebar”). But I cannot find how to apply this template to posts.

Do I understand right that eight years after the discussion about wider themes there is still no way to make posts sider, except for paid css editing?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Are you referring to https://dirtyhandscoding.wordpress.com/ which is running the old and unusual Twenty Eleven theme.

If your answer is yes then see here https://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/05/04/workings-of-duster/

Yes. There has been no change to that and it is unlikely there ever will be.

If you have the Premium or Business upgrade http://wordpress.com/plans and use Custom CSS, you can opt to apply custom CSS to a WordPress.com theme.

Note 1: If you have the required upgrade you can use this link https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization#postform so you can create a thread that will appear in the CSS Forum where you will get the help you need with CSS editing.

Note 2: You can also post there prior to purchasing an upgrade to get an answer to whether or not what you want to do can be accomplished via CSS editing.

Alternatively, you can simply select another free theme https://wordpress.com/themes/free and switch to using it. https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/#switch-themes

    Thank you for your answers!

I view the site on desktop.
It is normal today for a developer to have two widescreen monitors on his workplace. I think desktop or laptop are the only cases I have to actually care about. Reading long and complicated articles on mobile is not fun anyway.

I do not care much which theme to use, as long as posts are wide enough. Initially, I was using some other twentyXXX theme (probably twenty ten). But after I decided to try some other theme yesterday, I cannot return back to that theme (it is not showing in themes list).

As for https://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/05/04/workings-of-duster/, I’m afraid I cannot understand how it can help me. This blog is noticeably wider than mine, but it is not clear how to achieve it. The only relevant quote I see it “You can select sidebar right, sidebar left, or no sidebar at all (Appearance > Theme Options). Note: selecting the no-sidebar layout will result in narrower theme, not wider main column.”. The Duster theme is not even available for switch.

The closest thing to what I need is setting all font sizes to “small”. But this is an ugly solution, because readers have to zoom in to make test readable.

P.S. This is a personal blog on technical topics. The worst thing is that I do not need anything else except wider posts area.

Have you tried out some other one-column themes in the Customizer to see how your content displays in them?

Remember that if a theme has a special front page template, you don’t have to use it. Click through to one of the demo blog posts.

If you need more suggestions for one-column or wider themes, you can also add the MODLOOK tag to this thread’s sidebar to receive Staff assistance.

  • Hi, dirtyhandscoding.

You can go back to your old theme if you look it up on the “classic” wp-admin editor (although I see you managed to do that already).

Regarding full-width-ness, nearly all modern themes will display the main content full width if you hide widgets. You can remove all widgets to achieve this or hide them selectively (just on posts or certain post archives). Here´s how:

I would concur with timethief & justjennifer and suggest that you try more modern theme.

    Good luck!
