Still no support for Openstreetmap ?
-
It has been years now that a few users asked for a support for Openstreetmap (OSM) for WordPress.com blogs.
OSM is now mature and I think it is time to do so. So we’ll enjoy an open interactive mapping system on WordPress.com.
For WordPress.org blogs there are excellent plugins supporting OSM, the more complete and best one is (my guess) http://wordpress.org/plugins/leaflet-maps-marker/
but see also http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-gpx-maps/ (to embed GPS tracks).I hope the next stage for WordPress.com will allow to embed open maps (including GPS tracks), it is a must when georeferencing is now the standard in most applications.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There is only one way to embed only Google Maps and nothing else on wordpress.com blogs. This link may help you > http://en.support.wordpress.com/google-maps/

I knew about Google maps embedding, but I’d prefer to use an open platform like Openstreetmap instead of a proprietary platform like Google Maps.
Anyway I keep waiting for it! I’m patient ;-)

Okay I’m tagging this thread for staffs’ opinion :) Till then don’t hold your breath too ;)

Thanks for the idea. Since we have Google Maps, could you please explain what Openstreetmap would provide to the users, other than the platform it’s on?

Hi Jackie,
First of all, Openstreetmap is a collaborative mapping wiki and is open data, which allows a great bunch of different uses and applications, without any dependance of a proprietary company. I guess this is close to WordPress philosophy.
Second OSM is now mature and most data can be compared favourably with proprietary sources in many countries of the world.
Third, through various apps it allows the making of original interactive maps: see for instance the map on http://destinopueblosdelsur.com/ingles/maps/map-of-activities/ made with the excellent Mapsmarker app (http://www.mapsmarker.com/).
It also allows the embedding of GPS tracks: see the map on http://destinopueblosdelsur.com/ingles/what-to-do/in-chacanta/cane-honey-route/ (made with the WP-GPX app).
For blogs dedicated to hiking, trekking, MTB and other outdoor activities, it is a must. By the way georeferencing is now the rule in all sites. I hope WP.com will soon give us the possibility to do it through an open platform and open data.

Thanks for the information. I’ve added it to our list of ideas for future consideration.
