Still seeing ads on my personal plan

  • Unknown's avatar

I thought upgrading would at least remove all the advertising but I’m still seeing an ad in the top post; is this normal for a personal subscription?

the ads seem like inhouse ads

(getting my own domain seems to have opened a can of worms)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

Upgrading to Personal enrolled you in the WordAds program, which will allow you to earn money from ads placed on your site.

You can turn off the ads under your dashboard here:

Let us know if you need help with anything else!

How do I turn on wordads? When does the money actually get paid out? I’m mostly sad because it seems like I’ll never make enough revenue to offset my costs here. Too bad displaying ads doesn’t pay more. The real shame is there’s no imnformation on how many hits a person needs before it’s worth upgrading. I looked everywhere before I upgraded but I upgraded way too early and now I’m just paying. :(

  • Hey there,

I thought upgrading would at least remove all the advertising

The real shame is there’s no imnformation on how many hits a person needs before it’s worth upgrading.

Just to clarify, WordAds shows ads on the site rather than removing them. There are some FAQs here on payout schedules, how to increase earnings, etc. It’s a good option for sites with a strong following.

If you’re hoping to offset the cost of removing ads, you might consider adding premium content or an option to donate:

    Does that help?

  • Sorry for the repeat replies there; my internet connection hiccuped. I’ll remove the extras. But do let us know what direction you’d like to take.

    These tips may help too:

no worries thanks for any and all help, i’m going to add these things asap, thanks again

I’m going to try implementing some or much of this before I marked this resolved tho

all you support people have been awesome, thanks so much

however WordPress could be more upfront with costs versus benefits. Maybe if wordpress helped hold hands a little more and funded and nutured young blogs, maybe more new blogs would grow to be worthy and eventually develop strong followings? i bet a lot of people get discouraged and give up, just saying

  • @tom2tec we do send quite a few emails linking to resources that aim to help, but I’d recommend skimming these to find what suits you best:

https://wordpress.com/support/start/ – Very condensed how-tos with links to more details

https://wordpress.com/learn/ – Kind of a mini course to work through at your own pace. This is an older site, and some of it is out of date right now, but the ideas in getting connected and whatnot should be helpful still.

https://wordpress.com/webinars/ – These are definitely not out of date. If you have an hour, join a live session! We have them every day.

https://wordpress.com/go – Great place for FAQs and specific use cases

    https://wpcourses.com/ – Longer courses

And of course you’re welcome to ask questions here in our community.

    I hope this helps!

yah, all well and good except this really doesn’t address my concerns, I thought I was paying so people wouldn’t see ads, so what am I paying for?

Also, I already have PayPal, can I just use that to accept donations?

  • Hi there,

yah, all well and good except this really doesn’t address my concerns, I thought I was paying so people wouldn’t see ads, so what am I paying for?

With free sites, the ads you see make us a bit of money, and help offset the hosting and support costs so they can stay free.

When you upgrade to Personal, you are paying to have either of these two options that free sites do not have.

    • Turn off ads, so no one sees those when they visit your site
    • Keep ads on, but you make the money (instead of us)

I see you have WordAds set to ‘on’ currently, and your site is showing ads, and making you money.

Do you wish to hide ads on your site? You can do that by “pausing” them here: https://wordpress.com/earn/ads-settings/

If you wish to quit using WordAds altogether, let us know and we can close your ad account and issue a payout for the funds you have so far. Let us know if you want to consider that option.

Also, I already have PayPal, can I just use that to accept donations?

Yes, you can do that by using the “Pay with PayPal” block, which is an option for upgraded sites (but not available on free sites) and lets you easily add a PayPal payment button to any post or page to collect donations.

More info about how to set that up here: https://wordpress.com/support/pay-with-paypal/

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
