Still seeing “Upgrade to Premium” after removing CSS — stuck on free plan
-
Hello, I’m using the Twenty Twenty-Five theme on my free site:
https://lechistory.wordpress.comI briefly added some custom CSS to styles (to get gallery captions under image not over image) , which triggered the upgrade prompt. I’ve since removed that custom CSS, but my site still prompts me to upgrade to a Premium plan regardless of what I do
I’ve tried:
- Removing the CSS
- Switching browsers
- Clearing the cache
But the upgrade block persists. Since I’m on a free plan and want to stay that way, could you please reset my customization settings so I can use the full free theme without the premium prompt?
Thank you!

Hi @creatorspalette,
I’ve checked your dashboard, and based on the error message — “Your site includes premium styles that are only visible to visitors after upgrading to the WordPress.com Premium plan or higher.” — it appears that your site is currently using Styles that require a Premium plan or above.
To remove the error, please review your site in the editor and remove any Styles you may have applied or enabled. You can follow the instructions in this guide to access and manage Styles: Using Styles
If you’ve removed the Styles but are still seeing the same error, just let us know — we’ll be happy to assist further.

I had done next to nothing in the styles except look at the colors and saw any change from the first block was a premium requirement so I kept the default colors.
Much later when I found the gallery feature put captions on top of the jpeg, I looked for a way to put it under the image. I pasted some suggested CSS code in the Gallery Style which kind of worked (but still left a blurred image bottom) but gave me the message that I needed to upgrade to a premium theme. So I took out the CSS code thinking a 2 column gallery without captions would work better that a 3 column gallery. The message has never gone away. It all started when I was working on the Apple Trees Page trying to make it work for me. So I am stumped where else to look.

I’m having the same issue with mine – https://netgrowthdesigns.wordpress.com – it won’t let me launch for free. ALSO, it won’t do the WP-ADMIN panel pop-out.

Hi @stevedustcircle,
Even on a Free plan, you should still be able to launch your site. You can follow the steps outlined here: How to launch your website
Please note that your site will be launched using the subdomain netgrowthdesigns.wordpress.com. If you’d like to use a custom domain, you’ll need to upgrade to a paid plan. You can explore the available plans here: WordPress.com Pricing
You also mentioned, “it won’t do the WP-ADMIN panel pop-out” — could you clarify what you mean by that? I’d be happy to help further once I better understand the issue.Let me know if you have any other questions. I look forward to hearing from you!

I see what I did. Without realizing it, I was working with a Premium theme. SMH – LOL. Changed the theme and had no issues. Thanks for your help.

Hi @stevedustcircle,
Glad to hear that changing to a free theme fixed the issue.
You can filter themes in the Themes search to find only Free themes, or you can use the link https://wordpress.com/themes/free/.
Let me know if that helps.
