Still waiting!

Hi. I asked a question about how to get my domain maryannmartinsen.com back from you guys, a few days ago. Still waiting for the email answer. Is there a phone number I can call for faster service? I really need my domain back in order to do business!

Did you let domain/plan expire? Be careful you don’t lose your domain. This thread is tagged for staff assistance.

Hello. Thanks for getting back with me and sorry it took me so long to reply. Here’s what happened–I had a website with WordPress for a few years. My address was maryannmartinsen.com. My website designer decided this year that she wanted to switch me over to WIX, because she feels it’s more user friendly. The switch went fine, and my website was working great on WIX. But then I noticed the auto renewal charge come in for WordPress and contacted you guys to say I was no longer using WordPress and could they cancel it and refund me. They were very good about it, and I was happy until I tried to go to my own website and discovered it wasn’t possible. Evidently, when they closed my account, my domain stayed with WordPress, and I don’t have access to it. I did reach out for help a few days ago, and they said they had forwarded it on to WordPress for the appropriate people to address the problem, but I haven’t heard back. In the meantime, my WIX account no longer works, and I’m not able to conduct business. Please tell me how I can get my domain back and how soon I can expect to be back in business with my website. Again, it’s maryannmartinsen.com. Thanks for your help.

  • Ahh I’m sorry; I read the chat where you cancelled the domain. You mentioned you wouldn’t be using it anymore.

When you cancel a domain, it goes on hold for a few days, then goes through a redemption process. It costs $80 plus the renewal free to get it back, or you can wait for the process to finish and try to get the domain back then:

    Domain Expiration

Would you like to wait it out, or would you like an invoice so we can work with the registrar to get it back for you?

Hello. Thank you for your reply. Yeah, when I cancelled my WordPress account, I had no idea that my domain would be affected since my Wix site was up and running with my domain name and had been successfully working for quite sometime.

My main concern when I cancelled WordPress was that I get a refund. Nobody explained to me that the steps I was taking would put my domain name in some kind of limbo and to get it back I’d have to pay or wait it out. Had someone educated me, I would have taken entirely different steps.

But here we are. I have a couple of questions before deciding what to do next. First, considering my domain has already been in limbo for a few weeks, how much longer will it be until I can reclaim it? Can you be specific with the date or date range I can get my property back?

Secondly, if I go the route of paying to get it back, how much would it cost beyond the $80.00? Thanks again for your help.

  • Sorry to hear that. The person you spoke with may have also been focused on your desire for a refund, which included a domain renewal fee, and they understood you would not be using it anymore (vs using it elsewhere.) Still, I send them feedback so they’re aware.

how much would it cost beyond the $80.00?

The redemption fee is $80 and you would also re-pay the renewal fee, which for this domain is $18. That would extend your domain registration for another year, even though you’d be using it with your new provider. You could even transfer it to them so your billing is in one place, and that extra year would transfer with it.

Can you be specific with the date or date range I can get my property back?

I can’t give a promise on the date that it will be released. Please bear in mind, the registry is the current owner; if there are backorders for the domain, or if it’s considered a premium domain, it may not be released at all if it isn’t redeemed.

The earliest possible release would be 40 days after cancellation, so in this case that would be in the first week of February. Let us know what you’d like to do.

Just to be clear, if I pay the $98.00, would my WordPress account be reinstated immediately? Then, how would I go about moving my domain to Wix? If I choose to wait out the release time, how will I know it has become available, and then how would I go about reclaiming it? Thank you for educating me. I’m learning a lot about what mistakes not to make in the future.

  • The tricky part about waiting out the release time is that you do not get any type of notification of when the domain will be released. That’s risky for obvious reasons. Someone or a domain squatter can easily pick it up if you aren’t the first attempt to purchase it again. The safe way for forward is through the redemption process. Once the domain is restored you can transfer it to Wix with these instructions:

Okay. Let’s go through with the redemption process. Can you get that started and tell me what I need to do? Thank you.

  • Thanks for confirming. As a first step we will need to collect the domain registration/late redemption fees. Please check your inbox for the invoice we just sent.

After you make payment please return here to let us know so we can take the next step of recovering the domain.

IMPORTANT: We do not know to recover the domain unless you let us know you have made payment, so please be sure to come back here and update us, thanks!

Okay. I just made the payment.

  • Thank you for your payment. We have restored your domain.
