Your domain wasn’t stolen but according to whois info your domain expired some time ago. When you let a domain expire you are literally saying you no longer need it. After a lengthy period the domain becomes available for sale. On June 8 2022 it was bought by someone else.

And how do you explain the fact that all my portfolio content disappeared from the wordpress system and I didn’t receive a domain renewal notice?

Your content can still be found at https://karinfrutig.wordpress.com/
The domain upgrade just made your WordPress.com site load at your domain address instead of the free *.wordpress.com domain. So while you no longer own the domain, your content is still available.
Regarding the domain, we started attempting to renew the domain registration in December 2021 and each time we were met with a payment failure. Each failure would have sent you an email to the email address on file with your account with the subject line
The charge failed on your Visa 7766. We sent these notices on each failed payment attempt on the following dates:– Dec 23, 2021
– Dec 25, 2021
– Dec 27, 2021
– Dec 29, 2021
– Jan 2, 2022
– Jan 12, 2022
– Jan 22, 2022Then, at that point the domain went into redemption:
https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-expiration/#redemption-period
When no action was made to recover the domain from redemption, it was cancelled and re-entered into the public marketplace where someone else purchased the domain. Since another party owns the domain, they can set the domain nameservers to whatever hosting they choose, which appears to be a different site from your portfolio site.
You can continue using the free WordPress.com domain for your site, or you can upgrade to one of our paid plans and choose a different domain for your site.
I hope that clarifies things.

We ran a blog, maximumadventure.net, for several years. It is currently still being billed to our PayPal but another individual has taken over what we’re paying for and has created an SEO site that has no real content. How do we get that domain back?
