Stop email to Followers

    Hello,
Ours is a new website, only about 2 weeks old and we have very few followers so far. I am trying to figure out if we can set up a mailing list through Mail Chimp. I see there is a work around in one of the older posts but if we decide to take the Mail Chimp path is it possible to cancel the emails that automatically get sent to our followers every time we post something. I would like to stop that and instead send a more personalized email till we get Mail Chimp organized.
I am sure there is a way but I cant seem to figure it out other than making the site private which doesn’t seem right.
    Please help.
    Many thanks

We cannot use the Mailchimp plugin on any WordPress.COM blog but there is a workaround. There is no FTP access and no blogger installed plugin capability on any free hosted WordPress.com blogs and there is no upgrade you can purchase here that changes that reality.

If you want FTP access and to install plugins or third party themes into a site then you will have to hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and set up your own WordPress.org install.

For a WordPress.COM blog you can create a sign up page on MailChimp directly and simply link to it. Here’s a link to their instructions http://kb.mailchimp.com/article/how-to-add-a-mailchimp-signup-form-to-your-wordpress-blog

Thanks for the workaround, timethief. Is there a way to stop the emails that my followers get from WP every time I post once the signup form up and running. Eventually I would like to replace the standard wp email with a newsletter through Mailchimp. Thanks

Your subscribers control how frequently they receive your posts. You do not control that.

You can, of course, remove the blogs I follow widget but that will not prevent any WordPress.com blogger from clicking the follow link on their Admin bar. http://en.support.wordpress.com/following/

Does that mean I can’t do anything to stop the WP alert from going out to my followers? I intend to remove the follow me button once I have the mail chimp form ready but it seems I will have to delete all WP followers from the mail chimp database going forward so as not to duplicate the info them. I feel as if the WP followers will get the worse of the deal and will end up getting bombarded every time i post which will be often. Is there another way?

There is no thing as a mass mailing feature like marketers use here at WordPress.com. Your followers both WordPress.com followers and non-WordPress.com followers can subscribe to receive your posts by email and they can control the frequency of receipt. However, when subscribers or commenters provide an email address for a specific purpose such as commenting or receiving your posts you cannot use it for any other purpose. In fact doing that in Canada is against the law.

You can create a page and clearly state on it that you intend to harvest email addresses if that’s what you want to do. http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
You can add and customize a contact form with multiple fields, change the email address where you’ll be notified, and mark feedbacks as spam from your dashboard on that page. http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/

You can create a sign up page on MailChimp directly and simply link to it from your WordPress.com site. Here’s their instructions http://kb.mailchimp.com/article/how-to-add-a-mailchimp-signup-form-to-your-wordpress-blog but you cannot compel anyone to use mailchimp only.

You cannot prevent anyone from subscribing to your RSS Feed URL for posts on a public blog, whether or not they are a WordPress.COM account holder.

You cannot prevent any WordPress.COM member from following your blog by clicking the follow link on their Admin bar.

You cannot add or remove any followers as they control their own subscriptions, including the frequency with which they choose to be sent your posts. All they are required to provide is an email address and their delivery preferences (instantly, daily, weekly, never).

When you get it all sorted out and the Mailchimp working – make a new Post that explains what is going on and that the mailing list has been migrated – also have instructions for people if they need to cancel something or whatever – include a link if possible
