stop every page showing links to all pages on the site, like an automatic index

This has happened to me before and I am at my wits end and at a complete loss.

I started my site and it looked okay. I use pages and my homepage is a static page. Then I added more pages and every time I do, links appear at the top of my website which functions as a literal index I did not ask for. You can see the full page name and it’s a working link straight to each page.
This means you have to scroll through all of this to even get to the start of the page content. When this happened to me before it was comical, there were literally 50 links at the top of each page.

I forgot how I solved it. I thought it might have been some malfunctioning menu because I can never get menus to work so I deleted the supposed menu from the dashboard area and nothing. I thought it might somehow be a header so I tried deleting any header. I changed the theme to see if this was the problem and I changed the footer to simply “wordpress logo” at the same time, and now the stupid index is both at the top and bottom of every single page.

This is a total farce. This website is infuriating. It has caused me massive stress and embarrassment. I don’t even know what this is called to try to google things about it.

Also I would quite like to utilise this to make an index but I want control over where and when it appears which doesn’t seem possible.

Bonus Q: Can someone also explain how I make and use the actual menus without using code or paying for anything? Surely it’s possible to have a drop down menu. I don’t know if this is some sort of menu malfunction

I’m using wordpress.com the free version. Thanks

  • Hi @finnishlearner, could you share a link to the affected site?

It sounds like you may just need to set up a custom menu. Some themes (older ones especially) will just show every page link unless you have a custom menu in place, but I didn’t see a site on your account that matches this description.

Also, these forums are for the sites hosted and managed here at WordPress.com, vs. sites using WordPress code with another host. If you’re not sure about your site, send a link, and we can point you in the right direction.

If it is definitely hosted somewhere else, we’d recommend contacting support for your theme first, then searching and posting in the forums for the free WordPress software if you need more help: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

And, if you’d like to move your site to our services so we can provide direct help, let know! We’d be happy to help you move your site here.
