Stopping autosave of articles

  Can we customize WordPress to shut off the autosave function? I start but abort a lot of articles and in the end I spend time having to paw through the posts directory, deleting the ones I already discarded. So I want to know if there is a switch somewhere that shuts it off without having to modify compiler code for the blog software.
