Stopping people from following my old blog without setting it to private?

    I have re-directed traffic from my previous WordPress.com blog (jessicakorteman.com) to a self-hosted WordPress.org one under a different domain name (notesofnomads.com).

This re-direction is functioning fine, but when I get notification that somebody has followed the blog, it’s coming from the old site. The content of the follow notification email says that the person is now following at notesofnomads.com but the site title i.e. the site the email is being generated from is my former WordPress.com site title and I can only view these follows within WordPress.com. Nothing comes up within my new site.

I’m just wondering how people are able to follow a site they can’t see because they are automatically re-directed to the new one? I also received a comment on the WordPress.com site last month and I am wondering how the author was able to submit a comment on a site that cannot be “seen” because of the re-direction.

I am worried that I may not have set this up correctly and that all of these new follows we are getting on the old WordPress.com blog will be wasted as we no longer generate any content there. Does this mean that they are following but then won’t receive notification of any new posts because all new posts are being generated on the new WordPress.org blog?

I still have the WordPress.com blog listed as visible as when I set it to private, all of the photos I had uploaded into posts on the WordPress.com site previously didn’t show up on the WordPress.org one (I imported all of the content across from the old blog to the new one). As there was a lot of content imported, I didn’t want to have to re-insert all the photos on the new blog so I changed it back to visible and didn’t think it would matter as people are automatically re-directed to the new blog anyway so they couldn’t really “see” the old one. I’m not sure if this is contributing to the issue.

If someone could please clarify whether in fact this set-up would result in people being able to follow the old blog and as a result not receive any notifications on the new one, and any advice on how to rectify that, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Many thanks in advance,

    Jessica

OK, so I have found something that seems a little off. When I go to my WordPress.com dashboard and click on ‘My Upgrades’, My WordPress.org site is listed there, but it says that the domain is mapped to WordPress.com.

Is there a difference between mapping to and from WordPress.com? Because basically I want it to be that my WordPress.com blog is mapped to my WordPress.org blog only for the purposes of re-directing traffic. I want to only use my WordPress.org blog and have people follow us there.

The second thing I found was that it said “DNS needs to be updated”. When I click on that link, it seems that the configuration has not been completed.

It mentions email and says “It looks like you’re getting email at notesofnomads.com.” And says that I have a certain MX record set. I don’t know anything about this and I haven’t set up any special email address at my new site. My contact form etc all goes to my regular email address. Is this something I need to do in order for notifications to work?

Then it says I need to “Point notesofnomads.com’s nameservers to your site”. The name servers that are listed (BlueHost) seem to be correct, but it is instructing me to change them to WordPress.com. I’m not sure if I have misunderstood what mapping my WordPress.com and WordPress.org blogs actually means as basically I want to discontinue using my WordPress.com blog and point everything to my WordPress.org one, not the other way around.

If anyone could help point me in the right direction, I’d greatly appreciate it. Thank you for taking the time to read this long message.
