Hello there,
Please refer to the following steps for removing unused files to free up spaces:
https://wordpress.com/support/space-upgrade/#remove-unused-files-to-increase-available-storage-spaceAlternatively, you can upgrade to one of WordPress.com’s plans to get more storage space.

Hi there, let me just add that deleting Posts does *not* delete the associated media file from the Media Library.
Deleting media files from the Media Library removes the image/file from the post, as mentioned in that support guide, but the text content of the post remains with missing image place holders (empty squares).
If you decide to delete files, I recommend downloading an export of your site media files following this guide: https://wordpress.com/support/export/#exporting-the-media-library
Lastly, before uploading new images to your site, I strongly recommend resizing and optimizing them so you don’t run out of storage space again so quickly. For Independent Publisher 2, a max of 1880-2000 pixels wide should be sufficient. Here’s more information on that https://wordpress.com/support/media/image-optimization/ This is the one thing you can do to speed up your site loading time, especially on mobile.
Hope that also helps.
