what can I do about used up storage quota? I can’t upload a photo to use in current post. What happens if I delete old photos from storage? Will they still appear in old posts?

If you delete files from your media library they will no longer be available when your old posts call for them to display. It’s just like a “real” library: if the librarian has tossed out a book it is not available for any one to check out.

And once you buy the space upgrade (or open another public WordPress.com site under the same username account or host your photos elsewhere so you can hotlink your images), you will want to learn to resize and optimize your images before uploading them.

Thanks for the advice. It’ll take me a while to get my head around the optimization business. The Apple store 1-1 session will help. I hope that these mental challenges will help ward off cognitive decline.

There is a wonderful online utility (also available as a download for Macs and now Windohs too) called JPEGmini, which won’t resize your images, but simply puts them on a diet. NAYY http://www.jpegmini.com/
Having said that, resizing your images to the dimensions that you will insert them will also help to keep their clarity.
