Storage reduction through image scaling
-
I have a storage capacity issue looming after just 9 months. It appears, like a dunce, I never considered my image file sizes, and have always uploaded 4000×2250 px sized images; way too big.
I have learnt my lesson and now reduce to 1000×560 px which gives a file size of 120-280kb per image – much better and still allows me to display full page images should I want to, or perhaps if I later change my theme type.
For existing storage, I have started rescaling these using the Scale Image function within the Edit Image on Media Library. Yesterday I reduced some 90 images, each from more than 2MB down to 100-250KB. However there appears to be no reduction in my storage usage.
Does storage release take time for the cache to be cleared (perhaps you run a weekly batch)?
Or does the scale function not reduce the file size (even though it appears to do so in the edit screen. If that is the case, can a change be made your end once I have rescaled all my images (I could let you know when that is done)?
Many thanks

Do you happen to know about this area Ms TimeThief, or can point me in the direction of how to find out? Thanks, Spike

I believe the media caches are cleared every 3 days or so. I also believe it takes a month before one can reuse the same image file name on another image. However, I am not convinced that those are correct answers or adequate answers so I’ll tag this thread for a Staff response. The scale function just changes the displayed size – it does not change the size of the image as stored on the server.
1) you can buy a space upgrade
2) you can delete and upload new images that are optimized for the web
3) store the pictures somewhere else and hot link them into your blog – note – not every site like you to hotlink their content to another site

Thanks, that explains why no change… I’ll abandon that method (luckily only spent a couple of hours on that, so no biggie). Will start deleting/replacing over time. Many thanks, even if not what I wanted to hear :)
