Storage stuck at 3.1 GB after deleting hundreds of files
-
My media storage is stuck at 3.1 GB even after deleting hundreds of files. I’ve emptied trash and deleted posts too. I need someone to manually refresh my storage and tell me what’s still taking up space.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, files in your media library are the files that count against your storage limit and are permanently deleted when you delete them.
It may take a little bit for the storage limit meter to reflect your deletions, so if there’s no change in the next 6-12 hours, post back here and add a “modlook” tag to the Tags section of your forum thread sidebar so that Staff can help you.

Thanks, Jennifer!
I have waited a few days and there is still no change. I just added a modlook tag. I truly appreciate your help!

I took a closer look at your site and can see that most of the storage space is being used by images. From what I can tell, only about 100 files have been deleted out of nearly 3,000 in total, so the storage reduction may not be very noticeable just yet.
Also worth mentioning, you had a 10GB storage upgrade added to your account some years ago. If you haven’t uploaded much recently, it’s possible you were using more than the base 3GB all along, and that’s why it’s now showing as capped.
There’s no manual refresh for storage space. Once more files are deleted, the storage amount should adjust automatically.
That said, if you’re finding it difficult to manage space or you plan to upload more media, upgrading to a paid plan will increase your storage and give you more flexibility. You can check out the available plans here:

Thank you so much for looking into this for me! I truly appreciate your help.
I no longer actively post on the blog, but I also do not want to delete it. What do you advise? Approximately how many images or how many posts would I need to delete in order to get under 3GB?
Thank you for your help :)

Words don’t have any impact so it is just images that need deleting, especially if you have used a phone which can have image sizes of 2Mb – 4Mb each if you haven’t optimised them before uploading them to your site. (I do and have over 4000 images and have only used 2GB of space).
Saying all that, the site linked to your account has virtually no content and every link gives me a “not found”. You need to amend the “Home” link too which is dead and gives an error warning message. Perhaps you have another site?

@cristinsadventures Hello again, now that the storage situation is clearer, can we backtrack for a minute?
You said

What do you intend to do with this site? If it’s just a question of keeping it as an archive for yourself, you can make your entire site Private and only you will have access to it (unless you invite someone else to view it). https://wordpress.com/support/privacy-settings/ Since you’ve maxed out your Media storage, you wouldn’t be able to upload any new photos or other media.
If you intend to continue posting to this site, but not use these same media files, you can export your entire Media Library and then delete all files in the Media Library (once you delete them, they are gone forever). https://wordpress.com/support/export-your-media-library/
Alternatively, spring for the annual Personal plan which gives you another 3GB of storage space (for a total of 6GB), in addition to a few other features not available on a free site. Keep in mind that in order to maximize storage space and reduce loading time for visitors, you need to resize and optimize your images before uploading them to your site. https://wordpress.com/support/media/image-optimization/
Hope that helps give you some ideas on how to move forward.

Thanks for your response, Jennifer! I no longer actively post on the site and do not plan to upload any new media, so I am okay with the storage staying maxed out. I would just like to keep the blog online as an archive without deleting it.
Nearly all of my posts are already marked as private. Only two remain public.
My two questions:
- Can I leave the blog as-is with no further action if I am not posting new content or media?
- Is there a way to export the email addresses of my followers so I can reach them outside of WordPress if I ever want to share updates?
I really appreciate your help.

Hello again, I was away from my computer for a few days and only now saw your reply.
- Yes, you can leave it as it is, but ask yourself if you want your inactive site crawled by search engines and random visitors? If you don’t want to make your site Private, think about cleaning up your navigation so people don’t land on empty categories, pages, etc.
At the moment, I’d say leave the Home (and make sure to update the link to https://cristinsadventures.wordpress.com/), About Me, and expand and update the Contact for Services page, if that is still relevant. Just my 2¢
Here’s the IA archive page for the Matala theme so you have some info. - This is a bit more complicated and my reply should not be taken as legal advise. While you technically can export your subscriber list, what you can do with it afterwards is limited. You said “so I can reach them outside of WordPress”. Unless your subscribers have given you their permission to contact them “outside of WordPress,” most would consider that unsolicited email. You might consider importing that list to a new WordPress.com site, if and when you choose to create one, in order to share new updates.
Again, hope that helps give you some ideas on how you can move forward.
