I have a wordpress.com account upgraded to redirect to a domain I own (www.beingpreposterous.com). I would like to sell an item on the site. I’m currently just using a free theme (Superhero). Can I install a free ecommerce plug-in to that theme? If not, can I continue to run on wordpress.com and use a paid ecommerce theme? If not, does that mean I have to switch over to wordpress.org?
Your advice and expertise are much appreciated. As you can tell, I’m a wordpress newbie.
Thank you,
Serena Jetelina

Hi Serena,
We have quite a few built-in plugins here at WordPress.com, but it isn’t possible to install additional plugins on WordPress.com, for security reasons. If you’d like to sell something that you created on your WordPress.com blog, you can add a PayPal button to accept payments: PayPal
If you need a plugin or theme for additional ecommerce features, you’ll need to move to a self-hosted site using the free WordPress.org software. There are no restrictions on e-commerce if you set up a self-hosted WordPress.org blog instead of a WordPress.com blog, but there are some added responsibilities. You can read more about the differences here: WordPress.com and WordPress.org
We also have a guide for moving your site here: Moving a Blog
Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

Thank you Rachel! The paypal button option is very helpful, as is the “Moving your Blog” link.
